Dig vs. Digg. Calling LucasLegal... 24 Feb, 2007 / Comments: 18

It seems that the LucasLegal team are up in arms that people using the site digg.com could be getting it confused with a 12 year old point and click adventure game. They have opposed the request by Digg to trademark its name.
"THE DIGG mark is confusingly similar in sound, meaning, and appearance to the Opposer's THE DIG mark," reads the LucasFilm Notice of Opposition document filed last month in San Francisco. "The Applicant's registration and use of the DIGG Mark would likely create confusion, mistake, or deception in the minds of prospective purchasers as to the origin or source of the Opposer's Goods associated with THE DIG Mark."
The source of this story is here on Slippery Brick. You may be able to read the legal papers directly here at U.S. Patent and Trademark Office site, though the link appears down at present. The link was provided by Forbes.com.

What a load of crap! Of course LucasLegal are obliged to do this, just to show that they are still actively pursuing and using their TradeMarks. What a stupid world!

I'm dissapointed there is no mojo/behind image poking fun at this...

Ahahahah I can almost picture what has transpired.

    At LucasFilm legal department:

    Steve: "Hey Bern"

    Bern: "Hey Steve"

    (awkward pause)

Steve: "Hey, um, about what happened at Suzzane's party Saturday..."

Bern: "AW COME ON! Did you really have to bring that up!?"

    Steve: "Why not?"

Bern: "Look, I was drunk, you were drunk, I was totally out of my mind and what happened will never ever happen again!"

    Steve: "So we..."

Bern: "There's no 'we,' get that through your thick skull!"

Steve: "I just need closure, that's all..."

Bern: "Look, I love my wife and I would shoot myself, and you, before I lose her, okay?"

    Steve: "... Okay."

    (awkward pause)

(Bern goes back to his solitaire and Steve browses Digg)

Steve: "Hey, we should sue Digg"

    Bern: "What? For WHAT!?"

    Steve: "Um... I don't know."

    Bern: "Yeah, okay"

Did lucasarts try to sue coke when they released Full Throttle energy drink too? At least in that case the logo font is almost the exact same!

And they're not suing, they're merely trying to stop the trademarking of "Digg".
  • jp-30 on 25 Feb, 2007, 10:06…
Maybe Coke didn't try to trademark "Full Throttle". See also that Charlie's Angels movie...
  • Metallus on 24 Feb, 2007, 21:15…
    hahahahaha.
  • Udvarnoky on 24 Feb, 2007, 21:14…
This would be silly even if I thought for a second that LucasArts genuinely gives a shit about The Dig.

I bought these yesterday brand new for less than NZ$10 each (US$7) at the NZ version of Walmart ("The Warehouse").

Hahaha. I'm playing Full Throttle for the first time too. It's bloody great...

Yeah, I love Full Throttle. (Do a review!)
  • jp-30 on 01 Mar, 2007, 02:28…
Maybe I will. When' Mojo 2015 coming out again?
  • Udvarnoky on 24 Feb, 2007, 21:24…
    Man, that's awesome.

Reading through the legal stuff is interesting if only for the subdued delight of seeing "Monkey Island" on an infringement document.
  • Metallus on 24 Feb, 2007, 21:24…
It's probably newsworthy (unless it's already been posted) that those games got re-released in Australia and New Zealand (And goddamn not in the United States).
  • jp-30 on 24 Feb, 2007, 21:27…
Yeah, I've been too busy playing FT to write that news up. I'll add it shortly.
  • Udvarnoky on 24 Feb, 2007, 21:26…
That probably should have been reported, you're right. I think though (someone correct me) that these are merely re-releases of lines that were already widely available there as recent as a few years ago.
  • jp-30 on 24 Feb, 2007, 21:37…
No, we've had a few games such as Jedi Knight and CMI in a white box reissue in recent times, but never these DVD case reissues that run direct from the CD in win XP. And I've not seen Sam & Max since the Classic Adventures Collector's Series "Black label" double packs (MI Madness, S&M with DotT) maybe 6 years ago. The Dig and Full Throttle I've not seen since their original releases.

These're obviously the Activision Australasian versions of this series that came out in the UK last December. The front cover has ben jiggled a little bit from the UK releases at the bottom to accomodate the game classification.
  • Udvarnoky on 24 Feb, 2007, 21:42…
    So unfair.
  • jp-30 on 24 Feb, 2007, 22:05…
K, we can take this conversation to the new news item discussion, and leave this one for laughing at Lucas vs Digg.
