The Cave is out! Right now! 22 Jan, 2013 / 12 comments

Update 2 by Jennifer: It looks like The Cave made it's January 23rd release window on Steam afterall. So, it's totally out now.

Original post: Word has it you can find The Cave on Wii U in the US. PS3? Well, that's supposed to happen too. The rest of us will have to wait until tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the reviews have started to come in. Kotaku tells us we should play the game, while IGN is restrainedly positive about it. Digital Spy, meanwhile, just says meh. Mojo? We will review it... Someday.

So good, OK, or meh? Run and download The Cave as soon as you can to find out.

Update by Jennifer: It's out now on Xbox Live Arcade too. The Steam release has been pushed to tomorrow, the 24th of January.

Did a two-player playthrough with the Hillbilly, the Knight and the Adventurer. Great game, especially with more people in the room. Some people might be taken by surprise by the strong focus on puzzles instead of story, characters and dialogue. What's there in terms of writing is funny, but there's not a lot of it compared to something like Monkey Island. Definitely a stylistic choice though, as a more story-heavy approach (like the Telltale games) would only get in the way of the multiplayer fun.

The game looks great, feels great (especially walking around as the Hillbilly is a blast), and I forgot how much fun it can be to figure these kind of puzzles out with a friend. We both had our own "A-HA!"-moments, which was cool. Much better than Deathspank, and right up there with Double Fine's best!

Out now on Steam in Europe, but NOT for LINUX.

    Not. Cool.

EDIT: Our man says it would be available for Linux next week: Grumpy Gamer

Well, I didn't tested the Steam cloud gamesaves feature yet; it seems it could come in handy now (to begin the game on windows and then continue it on Linux).

I'm about to wrap up my first playthrough (Using the Knight, the Twins and the Hillbilly) and it has to be said that--so far--the game's a hot slice of deep-fried awesome. A perfectly sublime mash-up of classic Ronisms (Snarky voice-over, carnivals, darkly biting humor and the kind of puzzles that make you feel just smart enough when you've aced them without using a walkthrough) and Double Fine's fun-first aesthetic.

Well worth the price of admission, though I don't think it'll take more than about eight hours for a LucasArts vet to get through all seven campaigns.
