The skull that's so crystal, it has its own kingdom 05 Feb, 2008, 07:40 / 15 comments

The good folks at Movieweb claim to have an exclusive picture of the fourth Indiana Jones movie's titular crystal skull (though it is presumably one of many). See it.

Does that skull look...otherworldly to you?

Update: The studio made Movieweb take down the image. However, you can still see it at IndyJones.net.

The crystal skull's mouth and cranium shape is not quite right, but it would have been a nice easter egg if the skull had been based on Spielberg's Close Encounters aliens.

As has been noted on internet forums elsewhere, the Indiana Jones skull doesn't look quite as friendly as ET.

One thing that's especially interesting - I've already mentioned how it's obviously the poster one. But you know how in the poster's Skull between the eyes there seems to be a ghostly face not unlike one of the spectres from the Ark?

If you look closely at the new picture, the Crystal Skull actually has that face there too! It wasn't just artistic embellishment by Drew Struzan!

Interesting how it's all placed on old rags - as if it's in a crate.

My theory is that Indy doesn't loot it from the Incan/Aztec temple. It's already in one of those crates in the Government Warehouse where the Ark also resides. Indy has to recover it from the warehouse* and return it to the temple for some reason, perhaps to send a signal and stop an alien invasion (somewhat like the Humpback whale thing in that one Star Trek movie).

    * Didn't the early Indy teaser site have a crate stamped with a number similar, but not identical, to the Ark's?

My guess is that the pic's not part of the film - the Skull was just being stored like that and someone snapped it.

Well I agree it's a publicity still and not an actual grab from the movie. But the colour and positioning of those rags coupled with the shots of crisp, clean Indy climbing on the 'Ark' warehouse crates, and the initial teaser image of the stamped box is far too much for me to think there's no connection and to rethink my theory.

Yeah, that's totally possible too. Neither of us know for sure until we see the film!

    Well, I was pretty close!

    That's SO an alien skull.

Does it stride through the gates of Hell carrying Indy's head upon a pike?
  • The Tingler on 05 Feb, 2008, 15:00…
    Stride?
  • MrSneeze on 05 Feb, 2008, 15:19…
Alright, then, roll! Roll through the Gates of Hell! Must you take the fun out of everything?

Haha, epic. Wish I'd thought of that.

I think it's the same one that's on the poster.

That is really cool though! Pity about the 'movieweb' stamp over it.

Yeah, I agree it's the one on the poster.
