Jan "Laserschwert" Hofmeister recently got his crusty talons on the Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition soundtrack, and wrote up his thoughts over here.
Great review. Well written, and I couldn't agree more. The flutes in the opening theme (but also in many other themes, such as the cannibal village) are awesome.
I also LOVE the LOVE-theme (nice pun, eh?), with the violin opening and then the brass. And the LeChuck theme on the trombone... and Peter McConnell jamming on the violin for the Ghost Ship Shuffle... and... and... and...
Most sound effects that are directly mixed into the music track didn't disturb me at all, since I somehow feel they are part of the music. I've already heard orchestral songs with whistles, rainmakers, hammers or typewriters... So why shouldn't I accept rhythmically used whistles inside circus music? Or wave sounds that occur on two specifically chosen moments during the opening music. They could have used a cymbal row instead, but perhaps decided waves fitted better? I'd definitely agree on that.
Even the ghosts somehow feel in tune (and somehow consciously out of tune as well).
On other hand, I've turned down the general ambient sound for about 50%. For example, I really thought the pirates in the Scumm Bar were too loud. But thankfully, these sounds were not mixed directly into the music. (So, were they included to the audio-track on the CD you've recieved?)

Maybe out-takes from the voice recordings or something like that?

You should read my interview with Jesse, a while back. It'll explain.

Soundtrack seems like it'll be decent, and I'm pleased that Laserschwert got to hear it first. Well done!
