So apparently at PAX the new Steve Purcell artwork for the Tales of Monkey Island DVD release has been on show - and finally Telltale have released a good picture of it! What do you think?

Click!

Personally I'm loving the mix of elements from Secret of Monkey Island, Revenge, Curse and Tales... great job Steve!

When can we buy posters?

Update by Zaarin: An improved scan has been added to our galleries.

Dave Grossman & Dominic Armato signed my copy from PAX... I'm trying to find a gold frame today. *sigh*

The new colours are fucking *awesome*
  • elTee on 12 Sep, 2009, 16:32…
The colours are the same as the other image, it's just that this is a scan and the other was from a camera. But I suppose you already meant that and I'm just being pedantic, so ignore me!

While Prcell's technical prowess makes this pleasing to look at, the composition is pretty flat. I mean come on, that's gotta be the least dynamically posed knife-weilding monkey I've ever seen. He's just sitting there casually and everyone else is just kind of standing and staring blankly.

Yeah I agree. I was surprised about the uninteresting composition. Why is everything so symmetrical? Was Purcell rushed?

I was hoping the cover would be closer to the first two games, maybe not following so close to the Tales of art, but oh well. The cover doesn't necessarily have to connect so much with the game.

What's that green cloud up behind Guybrush?
  • Thrik on 08 Sep, 2009, 09:42…
    The pox, presumably.

I thought so too, but in my semi-drunken stupor, I thought it had a specific shape to it. (ie, outline of LeChuck)
  • Giygas on 07 Sep, 2009, 23:56…
I just realized that the monkey is actually LeChuck! I mean, is there any other explanation why LeChuck isn't on the cover?
  • Jennifer on 08 Sep, 2009, 00:10…
When I saw the cover, I thought the reason LeChuck wasn't on the cover was because Steve Purcell and Telltale didn't want to spoil his new form he got from the expulsion of the Pox of LeChuck from his system. Guybrush has his poxed hand, so the pox already happened, so you can't show LeChuck's zombie form.

Though it would be funny if the cure for the pox of LeChuck did turn LeChuck into a monkey. :D

Well this is definitely the best I've seen it, but I'm still not convinced. I still don't know what's going on. It looks like a collage, as there's no cohesiveness to it, but it isn't one... it's just a bit odd.

Still, definitely the best I've seen it looking.

See? That's not so bad. I Dig It!

    Revenge?
  • spiralout on 07 Sep, 2009, 21:39…
    Oh LeChuck's Revenge! I'm stupid.
  • Ascovel on 07 Sep, 2009, 20:47…
    Two times, please.

    No, thanks.

Very nice. Monkey Island meets N.C. Wyeth's Treasure Island art.
  • NatsFan on 07 Sep, 2009, 14:56…
That's our Steve. You can always count on him to make something amazing.

I love it like I love most op Steve Purcell's work.
The atmosphere is very eerie, and it makes me wonder what the characters are looking at. The only thing that I dislike is the lack of detail in the background.
Where SMI and MI:LCR had some really quirky background details, this one kind of lacks it.
I love the Sai wielding Monkey though, and I hope he'll appear in the game somewhere! :D
  • Thrik on 08 Sep, 2009, 09:43…
Don't forget there'll be a big title covering a lot of the top, though.
  • Ceres on 07 Sep, 2009, 13:53…
While I love the painting as a whole, Guybrush's head is slightly bothering me.

    No idea why. :/
  • Ascovel on 07 Sep, 2009, 17:36…
I don't mind his head, but I don't like his pose. It looks like he is posing to the camera showcasing his sword and the evil hand.

    Otherwise great art though.
  • Laserschwert on 07 Sep, 2009, 15:50…
Same here... his facial expression is just... empty.

    Elaine looks GREAT though.
  • Haggis on 08 Sep, 2009, 09:59…
Looks like he just had a peanut butter sandwich with a little too much peanut butter...
  • The Tingler on 07 Sep, 2009, 17:09…
Actually, I think he looks... haunted.
