Telltale Gets Serious? 03 Sep, 2009 / Comments: 19

During an upcoming interview with VG247, who just couldn't wait to spill this particular news, Telltale Uber-Mind Dan Connors said that they would be announcing new titles (plural) "around October, or in the next few months".

“I think there’ll be some combination of things. I think we’ll be sticking with some of the franchises we’ve worked with, and we’ll be announcing some new franchises, probably in some new genres as well, not just comedy.”
I think it's safe to assume that Sam & Max Season Three will be one of those old franchises, and maybe even another round of Tales of Monkey Island (although maybe not, as that won't be finished until November).

However it's the note that Telltale are looking to take some more serious franchises like CSI that's quite interesting, especially as Dan then name drops The Sopranos, True Blood and Lost as well as the much-hyped PS3-only adventure Heavy Rain (from the makers of Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy & The Nomad Soul). Take a looksee.

So, what YOU (yes, YOU) think? Would Loom count as "more dramatic"?

I wonder if, when they "serious", they mean "more adult", in the same way that In Bruges or Let the Right One In is serious. Both deal with very mature themes, but have their share of comedy as well.

I highly doubt it will actually be based on The Sopranos (long over) or Lost (long shit).

I do find it odd that they didn't once mention CSI in that article though. Maybe they do in the interview itself.

You can rule out The Sopranos and Lost purely from the fact that they were mentioned. If TT was at any stage of negotiation for these licenses they wouldn't be able to talk about them at all.

    True.

It's going to me Loom/Monkey Island! Guybrush and Bobbin combine forces to defeat the merged LeChuck/Chaos in an epic battle!

(Hmm... that reminds me of ReBoot...)

I hope it's not some American series that I never watch... hmmm... Spooks would be nice! But that'll never happen.

I wish they wouldn't cite Heavy Rain. I mean they could just be talking about the tone, but I can't wait until the hype around David Cage and his game stops.

    Hype? What hype? ;

I wouldn't say that Loom counts as "more dramatic."

However, there is no conceivable reason why it couldn't, or SHOULDN'T be. I generally have to remind myself that in no other LA title does the player inadvertently cause the death of an innocent kid for the sake of solving a puzzle, to say nothing of bloody dismemberment and invoking the apocalypse.

I'd love to see a weightier take on Moriarty's world. Not that it's gonna happen, but... toes crossed.

The Dutch gaming blog Bashers.nl talked to Dan Connors a while back. He already talked about Telltale's interest in more serious games in the future. He said he would love to do something like The Sopranos or Lost. I doubt it's going to be one of those, but yeah, I'm really curious. I wasn't expecting new game announcements so quickly!

I hope we're going to get an awesome announcement-trailer like with Sam & Max and Strong Bad. Not just some beta gameplay like with Monkey Island.

    Here it is: http://bashers.nl/special-podcast-interview-met-dan-connors-ceo-van-telltale

The blog is in Dutch, but the audio-interview is in English, except for the intro (only 10 seconds).

What you think, maybe a Star Wars adventure game? Or Indy?
  • elTee on 03 Sep, 2009, 14:11…
I think they may actually make a Star Wars series - but based on the forthcoming live-action TV show.

(I have no legitimate reason to think that at all, though. But I mean, CSI is a TV show!)

Please don't be Grim Fandango the REAL Monkey Island 5!?

What is that supposed to mean?
  • Radogol on 03 Sep, 2009, 15:03…
I'm making fun of Icebox. He called both Vooju and, get this, DeathSpank "The REAL Monkey Island 5" in the comment section ;)

Well, with Deathspank I was sort of kidding...
