Tales Q&A with Telltale's Mark Darin, Eurogamer interview 22 Jun, 2009 / Comments: 23

A few days back Mark Darin, the Co-Lead Designer for Tales of Monkey Island, held a Q&A session on the Facebook wall of the Monkey Island Adventures page. It's buried now, and a bit of a jumble, so head on over to the Telltale forums where member tomo_cjt has cleaned it up and edited out the dross and posted it for your reading pleasure.

Tingler Updates: To save making another similar post, Eurogamer have an interview with Dave Grossman about the game, with a few new screenshots!

Of particular note is why Tim Schafer's not involved (apparently Ron's involvement caused some legal problems) and Dave's surprised "no comment" when asked if they would be doing an Indiana Jones game...

Glad to see specifically that Ron came in and made change to the Elaine character. If anyone knows how she should act or what she should say, it's him. I didn't really feel it was her in CMI or EMI.

While no details are given, I hope like hell Hothead aren't being dicks. After all if they do things "right" they can leverage publicity for Ron's Deathspank off the (likely) success of TOMI.

Also, it's a little different for Tim, surely? He owns Double Fine.

Hothead has been very cool about the whole situation. We really like those guys.

Oh and I guess I should have said this in the first post, but there haven't been any legal problems, per se. Nothing bad has happened. I think Dave just meant that there are legalities that need to be taken into account, since these guys work for other companies that are not Telltale.

    Ahh, gotcha.

I suspect it's not anyone major at Hothead, it's probably just their LAWYERS, who couldn't care less about good publicity or games.

plus, would Hothead realy want to piss off Ron by giving crap to Telltale for talking with him about his 'baby'?

    Very odd.

When I read about this "legal wrangling" in today's newspost I figured it was a joke about Ozzy and Dio in Brutal Legend. How weird.

Dave Grossman: Um, I try not to be too picky. If I was going to do one of those little Lucas properties I might even do Loom. Not sure how popular that would be. I always thought it was good.

I've never even considered it before, and I'm fairly certain Grossman is just joking, but a game in the Loom world actually wouldn't work too badly in an episodic format.

"I've always wanted to do the works of Kurt Vonnegut but I think it'll take us a while!"

If Telltale go on to create games based on Vonnegut books I will actually cry tears of joy. Monkey Island and Vonnegut are my two favourite things in the world.

Yeah. And Loom is about the same length as any TellTale episode anyway ;)
  • Ascovel on 23 Jun, 2009, 17:46…
Only the severely cut CD version :P
  • clone2727 on 23 Jun, 2009, 18:20…
Well, you could buy me the FM-Towns version so I could enjoy the full game :P
  • The Tingler on 23 Jun, 2009, 11:50…
I hope so, Loom would be great!

Mark's become something of a Telltale staple, eh? I think he's been working with Telltale since S&M: Season Two - since Strong Bad, at the very least.
  • fov on 23 Jun, 2009, 19:57…
Mark started in 2006 and worked on both CSI games before moving over to Strong Bad.

Does 'one new screenshot' now constitute 'a load' or am I missing some hidden stash of new screenshots somewhere?
  • The Tingler on 23 Jun, 2009, 11:45…
    There's three isn't there?
  • The Tingler on 23 Jun, 2009, 11:46…
And besides it says 'a few' not 'a load'! I wrote 'a load' initially, but changed it almost immediately!
  • SurplusGamer on 23 Jun, 2009, 12:59…
I must be missing two, then. There's the one with Guybrush strapped into the chair and the Monkey... but all the others I've seen on the Telltale site before. Unless you can direct me to the ones you mean, I'd love to see 'em!

Is the big Voodoo Lady one new? Otherwise, damn, yes, I mistook one for a new one. Stupid Eurogamer.
  • The Tingler on 23 Jun, 2009, 08:37…
I don't want any new videos, but I'd like some decent wallpapers!

Excellent interview, even if a few questions were obviously repeated. I think the consistant "Bwahahaaa"s, especially during the "Which other popular characters will be returning?" question is a good indicator that Murray's coming at some point! Hooray!

cool stuff. If only they would release some new screens or videos till launch to ease the wait.
