TMI Part 1 with Earl Boen, on DVD and Telltale's site soon 10 Dec, 2009, 11:22 / 11 comments

For those of you wondering how the imminent new version of Tales of Monkey Island Chapter 1: Launch of the Screaming Narwhal, updated with Earl Boen's voiceover work, will be made available, Telltale has answered your question in the latest issue of their newsletter.

"Earl Boen, the man who first gave a voice to the evil ghost/zombie/demon pirate in 1997 with Curse of Monkey Island™ has returned to play LeChuck in the final chapters of Tales of Monkey Island!

Plus, he's re-recorded lines for the prologue of "Launch of the Screaming Narwhal", which will be available on the Collector's DVD, and coming soon as an updated Chapter One download on our website!"

This should allay the concerns of those who feared that the TMI DVD would be the only option for hearing Earl in all his demonic glory.

On the other hand, I feel concern for anyone who's not going to buy the season DVD anyway. Those things are awesome.

I realize Mr. Grossman has commented otherwise, but I've intentionally held off on playing any of the episodes until the DVD is released. It may defeat some of the intention behind the design, but I'd personally much rather experience the game this way.

Delving further into that, I hope that TellTale is considering allowing for seamless episodic playback via the retail release.

I did that with Season One of Sam and Max. However, I felt the experience was much better getting them as the episodes are released (which I did with Season Two and TMI).

I tried playing through the first series of Sam and Max and couldn't really get on with it due to the massive amount of hardly-changing scene reuse.

However, having played TMI episode-by-episode it does seem like a game that'd hold up as a single experience far more than Sam and Max. There is scene reuse, but it's nowhere near as bad as Sam and Max.

I think TMI holds up very well as a standalone game. To an extent I can see it benefiting from being played like that because the season's weaker moments would be smoothed out by the plentiful awesomeness in the overall series.

I think Sam & Max season 1 was pitched like a TV Sitcom - which do have very few sets / scenes in general.

I was playing through the beginning of chapter one the other day, and I have to say, the other guy really doesn't do a bad job. I mean other than his "Harrrrrrrr! Harrrrrrr! Harrrrrrrrrrrr!" but that is really the voice directors fault for not directing him properly.

With that said, Earl Boen. Awesome.

I thought the "Harrr Harrr Harrr!" was pretty cute, actually. The lines that stuck out for me were the "How good of you to join us" bit and the one where he called him "Geekwood".

I didn't have an issue with the voice being changed as long as the guy didn't deliver the lines out-and-out badly like in those cases.

I agree, actually. He wasn't as bad as people are saying. But it's nice that Telltale got Earl Boen to do the whole season in the end.

    Awesome!
Gives me another reason to play it all over again!
Can't wait for the DVD release! Hoping for plenty of special features! :)
