TMI Chapter One: Reviewed 07 Jul, 2009 / Comments: 38

Our review for the first chapter in Tales of Monkey Island is now online, which means that you can soon download and play the game for yourself (if you can't already).

I decided not to give this review a score because scores are silly. Mojo has, for the moment, assumed a 5/5 score, which should hopefully be edited out providing our technology enables us to do so.

It is killing me that I'm not playing this already. When did you guys get to download?

I live on the East coast of the US. Come on!
  • Capn_Nacho on 07 Jul, 2009, 15:34…
oooorrrr am I being a reactionary idiot. More soon.
  • Capn_Nacho on 07 Jul, 2009, 15:42…
It has just become obvious that nobody has the game yet. Pretend I never said anything.
  • Radogol on 07 Jul, 2009, 15:49…
We're not pulling your leg ;) Review copies.
  • Capn_Nacho on 07 Jul, 2009, 15:55…
Oh, yeah, I knew that a select few had played it. :D In my imagination, though, everybody had already downloaded the official release but me.
  • Radogol on 07 Jul, 2009, 15:58…
Well, the Telltale site just broke down, so it should be coming very, very soon ;)
  • Capn_Nacho on 07 Jul, 2009, 16:06…
    Man, I hope so.
  • Radogol on 07 Jul, 2009, 23:39…
    It's live now.
  • JohnGreenArt on 07 Jul, 2009, 14:55…
Anyone here try running the game in Crossover or Parallels on a Mac? I'm able to get W&G to run in Crossover, and Sam & Max sorta runs, but I wish ToMI had a demo so I could know for sure.

No news on when the WiiWare version will drop?

  • Radogol on 07 Jul, 2009, 15:01…
The game is the demo. You can download it and play it up to a point for free, and then, if you decide it's worth your money, just buy and type in the serial number.
  • JohnGreenArt on 07 Jul, 2009, 15:10…
    AH, cool!

Great review and a great Monkey Island game. It easily beats down every other Telltale game so far for me.
  • Herman Toothdecay on 07 Jul, 2009, 12:48…
I am so excited right now. Please make time go faster so work will end and I can play :(
  • Zaarin on 07 Jul, 2009, 12:13…
The quality of the speech samples is much higher than Wallace & Gromit. I approve!
  • clone2727 on 07 Jul, 2009, 11:23…
Bah! I can't download it yet! *clicks refresh repeatedly*
  • neon_git on 07 Jul, 2009, 13:21…
Yeah me too - what gives? :(
  • jp-30 on 07 Jul, 2009, 13:25…
It's 6:30am in california. You have probably 4-6 more hours to wait.
  • neon_git on 07 Jul, 2009, 13:39…
Ah yeah, I just got tripped out into thinking other people were able to download it already.

I'm clearly too excited to comprehend the written word right now.
  • clone2727 on 07 Jul, 2009, 15:53…
Yeah, the whole review copy thing threw me off :P
  • Capn_Nacho on 07 Jul, 2009, 14:13…
    ahhhhhhhhhhh
  • Radogol on 07 Jul, 2009, 10:05…
I wouldn't be so harsh on the nose puzzle. I got the solution right away but, yeah, I was a bit bemused that it worked. Still, not to spoil too much, I just looked at my inventory and there was only one item with the correct shape. You could say it's a graphical puzzle.

I agree with jp30 - I also played mouse only. Aside from the monkey puzzle (a.k.a. best puzzle in years) where you simply can't, and one place where it was very easy to trigger a cutscene with a wrong step, and more precise controls were called for.
  • Ascovel on 07 Jul, 2009, 14:05…
yeah, the nose puzzle worked simply because there HAD to be a nice replacement handy

I had problems with the puzzles that required the right sequences of events though
  • jp-30 on 07 Jul, 2009, 10:12…
It was described as a nose right from the start. I found that part really easy. It was the axle that took me a while - but SO satisfied and funny when solved.

There was one only one really disappointing puzzle, the one involving a fight. More on that after the release.
  • Radogol on 07 Jul, 2009, 10:31…
I'll be there, can't wait to talk about it. It was hard holding this stuff in for four days ;)
  • SurplusGamer on 07 Jul, 2009, 09:00…
    needs moar screenshots!

Nice review. Of course you loved it, but still, I'm excited for getting home from work tonight.
  • jp-30 on 07 Jul, 2009, 08:53…
I absolutely loved the direct mouse control. I had a wine glass iin one hand at all times.

And the puzzle with the monkey may be my new favourite adventure game puzzle ever.
  • Kroms on 07 Jul, 2009, 09:03…
Hi. Some of us haven't played it yet.
  • Gabez on 07 Jul, 2009, 09:04…
WHAT? There's a MONKEY in this game? Spoilers!!
  • jp-30 on 07 Jul, 2009, 09:12…
Exactly. Kroms, what are you doing posting under this review if the mention of a monkey being part of Monkey Island annoys you?
  • The_Petrified_Monkey on 07 Jul, 2009, 08:49…
Very nice review. Can't wait to play it later today.

Was very glad also to see that, despite TellTale's recommended specifications, it does run well enough to be enjoyed on a lower spec machine. I was beginning to get worried with my ageing laptop with only 1gig of ram and a couple of hundred megs of graphics memory.

Anyway, enough of the technical nonsense, sounds like they've cracked the writing style.

I don't know what else to say! I'm SOOOOO excited!! :D
  • Kroms on 07 Jul, 2009, 08:49…
We were at a 1/5 two minutes ago.

I bet this is all part of the cover-up image I can't find.

    (PS: OMG so cute).
  • Gabez on 07 Jul, 2009, 08:53…
    Maybe you made a mistake.

Or maybe this is all part of...
  • The Tingler on 07 Jul, 2009, 08:44…
Excellent. And there's music on the Overview screen in the final version? Brilliant, I thought it was too quiet too.

    I agree with the 5/5.
  • Kroms on 07 Jul, 2009, 08:26…
    Mojo goes Idle Thumbs.
  • jp-30 on 07 Jul, 2009, 08:54…
We're now only a podcast!? Noooooooo.
