THQ to publish two of Double Fine's new games, first details 11 Aug, 2010 / 8 comments

If you didn't know already, there are FOUR Double Fine games in the pipeline, all digital download titles. We already know about Costume Quest, the adventure/RPG out this October and just revealed today, but now THQ has announced that they will be publishing another one of the Big Four DF Games.

The second title will be "a third-person adventure game scheduled to be released in early 2011" (from the press release). Now, we all know what publishers call "adventure" we call "action adventure" so I wouldn't get my hopes up in that particularly regard... however, I am personally predicting that something Psychonauts-based will be part of one of these four games.

"We are delighted to work with the creative genius of Tim Schafer and the entire Double Fine studio," said Martin Good, Executive Vice President, THQ Kids, Family, Casual Games, and Global Online Services. "Delivering high-quality content across a variety of digital distribution platforms is an important growth initiative for us, and we are pleased to do so with two titles whose potential appeal could encompass both hardcore and casual players."

The bad news is that both titles will only be available on Xbox Live and Playstation Network. For many that's not an issue, but for others that's a No Play Zone. Sigh.

I honestly don't know where you're getting this, though. Is there some hint I'm missing?

I posted it a while ago (I think it's long since dropped off into the NEWS VOID OF MOJO), but in a recent Eurogamer interview Tim explicitly didn't deny working on a Psychonauts-related game. In the same interview he didn't deny making downloadable-only games. Specifically adding this quote after the Psychonauts thing: "If we can get it to the point where we're making multiple games, then we can work on the sequel while we're exploring new IPs at the same time." Which is EXACTLY what they are doing.

Tim has definitely hinted that one of the games will be Psychonauts-related, but I agree that I doubt it will be a full sequel.

I honestly don't know where you're getting this, though. I mean, the closest I've come to seeing even a whiff of a hint - and this isn't even that; this is Boyd Cooper territory right here -is that the recent interview had one paragraph that reminded me of Old Man Murray, which if you were insane you would say meant Schafer had been collaborating with or talking to Erik Wolpaw about the writing. But again, you'd have to be living in a mental hospital to believe that. Is there some hint I'm missing?

Pretty sure it's not a full-fledged sequel to Psychonauts, anyways. And I think, by the way, that a couple of DF's games are retail.

Also, you forgot to link to the press release. :)

And you can't link to press releases! That's all the information on it anyway, apart from general company details and bits on Costume Quest we already know.

So, then EA is no longer going to be their regular publisher I guess?

I think they offered these four games to multiple publishers, and different publishers went for different games. There's every chance EA is going to publish at least one of them - especially if one of them is a larger, retail release.

I'm soooo glad they've abandoned PC! This is great! Keep it up Double Fine! XBL or PSN, they're both fine by me!!

    (Sorry Chris ;)

Considering that their last major game was only on Xbox360 and PS3, since they decided to quickly put out some new games, it's not surprising that they would be based off of existing tech that they already have, i.e., I'm not holding my breath for PC or Wii releases any time soon. :(
