Just when you think every song possible on guitar has been written, someone finds a new way to pluck the strings; results may vary in quality, but the variations keep coming.
Based off this philosophy, we get Star Wars: Detours, the most recent entry in the once-respectable Star Wars franchise, getting its own, new variation: Star Wars as comedy. Star Wars Detours riffs on the Star Wars guitar, resulting in an oh-so-hilarious trailer. Or, "Yo, dudes, the Empire is pretty chill," as the future this guy says.
I'm personally not joining until they put-out the dubsteb variaton on Star Wars, but you can feel free to watch that trailer a second time: click to confirm you'd like to hear the line, "Don't make me cut your arm off, sonny, old Ben-Ben needs grocery money" again.

THIS is a Star Wars comedy!

And to answer your question Rogers, I think you're a bit to short sighted on the matter.
As I said before, I've never been bounded at all with the SW franchise, so I would say I'm BLIND on the matter. I was just asking, I got it now! Thanks!
Anyway, I'm sorry you got upset, Thunderpeel; it's just hard not to be cynical.

Imagine that Black Isle made the exact same parody as StarWars Detours, but within Torment, have TNO and Morte and Grace and Razel and whoever do the exact same sort of silly things.
Would it even matter if the humour is good?
I'm speaking for myself here. I've never played Torment, but if Black Isle had done a parody of Fallout, I would have loved it. If Tolkien would have written a parody of The Lord of The Rings, I would have loved it.
What is the harm? Really. Are you afraid someone is going to temper with Star Wars? Please.
The problem with this, is that it is tasteless, revolting and sad. During several years they had an annual competition at Atom Films (was that the name of the site? so long ago, can't remember) for creating Star Wars parodies, and Lucas himself chose the winners. Some of those were really good.
Almost Everyone
Waaaaaaah!
Really guys, its Lucas and Star Wars. Haven't most of you been a member of this site long enough to see the shit that gets officially pumped out from this company?
Most everyone hated the new trilogy, even though most everyone wanted it to be cool.
We all mock all the Star Wars games that come out, because they almost all are "teh sux".
If anything, this is a official way to poke fun at all the fuck ups that have come up in the Star Wars universe, while at the same time, finding funny jokes to make about the originals. If this was a fan video on YouTube from someone from the LucasForums, you would probably be eating it up and asking for more.
I highly doubt this show is representative of the new official direction of Star Wars. I don't think that Episode VII would come out, using this show as a base. It basically seems like a fan show, that makes fun of something people love.
You guys are acting like its the end of a fucking legacy, when I'm pretty sure, if nothing else, that happened the first time we all saw Jar Jar Binks.
Its a show, aimed at young adults, with humor for that demographic. If you're 40 and pissed, guess what, you probably don't like the other shows these people make and watch either.
Get over it.

The more I think about it, the more this news post upsets me.
1. This is just a trailer. You can't dismiss an entire series because of one trailer.
2. Lucas doesn't run LucasFilm any more.
3. I don't recall seeing similar posts when ROBOT CHICKEN or FAMILY GUY did Star Wars parodies. Those were just as "official".
4. Any anger about the quality of this series should be directed at those who made it: The ROBOT CHICKEN guys.
I'm a little ashamed to be part of this community right now.
ThunderPeel, I loved your installation guide to Planescape: Torment you did way back and I got the impression that you were really passionate about the game, its characters and its story, which indeed are all fantastic and truly memorable with an almost unprecedented depth.

Even though it's not great, the Family Guy parody is decent, has some good bits here and there. It's also more acceptable, I guess, because it's Family Guy doing Star Wars. I agree that this being straight-forward Star Wars being retarded doesn't have the same punch as something like Spaceballs. But the main reason Star Wars Detours is bad, is because it is bad. Really bad.
ThunderPeel2001, you are an idiot and I'm ashamed to share a planet with you.

Of course you can. Even moreso when the trailer is cringe-worthy and shows exactly what's wrong with the Star Wars franchise.
The trailer is supposed to showcase the very best of something and convey its "feel". With this bad a trailer, we can infer that the series proper will be even worse.

Well, he /is/ the chairman and CEO.

Both always were comedy series. And although Family Guy really sucked at it, it's no a 1/1000th as bad as this trailer.
Star Wars is supposed to be a semi-serious sci-fantasy franchise.
Hell, I'm normally the guy wishing all bad things at Star Wars, but even I think this trailer is too cruel a punishment.

And I agree with MKZY. Maybe there will be a way to shield kids to this. Extreme parental controls on TV maybe?

Hm.
I've never been a SW fan, so I don't see what's so bad about it, some stuff in the trailer made me actually laugh.
Why do everybody seem to hate it this much?
Star Wars is a serious franchise, and it should be treated as such. That's why we have stuff like the LEGO games, disco albums, and green cartoon rabbits.
I'll have to agree with Giygas. And to answer your question Rogers, I think you're a bit to short sighted on the matter. It is not a debate on whether the humor is funny or not, I could accept if a sitcom has a bad season. It is about the StarWars brand and its identity.
There was a time, before Ewoks, when StarWars was a spotless respected brand. So much so that people bought some of the pre-midichlorian Jedi philosophy. Hell, StarWars people even mocked StarTrek people, calling their fluff silly, imagine that today!
The reason I find the StarWars brand so sold out (or whored, as we lovingly call it on Mojo) is because everyone is out for short term gain, quick money and easy laughs. Vader falling of a chair, Vader saying the Empire is "chill yo so join it or something", Vader and the Emperor going on vacation. Han Solo having a big nose. Someone not wearing pants to name but a few of the brand-damaging puns made in this video.
Now Imagine the same treatment made by the creators of other brands. Sauron going to an optician because he is near sighted. A Chuthulu going to the hairdresser, the Emperor from W40k rolling in a wheelchair singing "I'm great!" like a mantra.
I'm not debating whether this is funny, but if it is appropriate. It would undoubtedly make me take those brands less seriously, and If I'm not taking the story and characters of LOTR, Lovecraft or Warhammer 40.000 seriously, then what's the point?
I'm not saying that parodies cannot be done successfully. The first Starship Troopers movie is a good example of this. Beyond being a mere standard action film, it made some interesting political discussions and a wonderful satire of the American (USA-ian?) ideal and foreign policy by satirizing the entire point of the book. This, though, came of the cost of angering the fans of the book greatly, and pretty much warping the image of the brand and book beyond recovery. As well as paving the ground for the later Starship Trooper movies, whom sold out the satire, or never got the point. I'm unsure which.
In conclusion Rogers. The reason for my dislike of the StarWars Detours (tm), Clone Wars animated movies and other silly or very silly spin offs is that I will never be able to tell my theoretical future children that "old" StarWars is cool, well made and has an interesting story. Not when they are equivalating Vader with Goofy.
As someone who grew up watching the series and took my son to see the 3d re-re-release of Phantom Menace, I think this looks like the best Star Wars project with LucasFilms name on it that I've seen since 1983.

I wonder who's bright idea this was anyway?
(Though, I did like the "Must have gone over budget joke")
RIP Starwars, I miss you buddy.
