Star Wars Retrospective Episode VII - Heir To The Fanboys 22 Jul, 2008 / Comments: 4

GameTrailers' enjoyable Star Wars gaming retrospective continues with Episode VII, which covers the 'Expanded Universe' games (which technically Jedi Knight, The Clone Wars, and all the ones which aren't direct film adaptations are, but we'll forgive that). This means Shadows of the Empire (the last big gap-filling Star Wars gaming extravaganza that TFU is also doing) and the two Knights of the Old Republic games.

(sniff) Sorry, I just remembered KOTOR II's ending and that the next game is a MMORPG.

And speaking of fan-angering MMORPGs, the next episode is on Star Wars Galaxies.

Yay, another genius thinks that KotORs become turn-based after you hit the pause key! Seriously, where do these come from?

Ahem... Despite all the cuts, I still view TSL as a far superior game to the original KotOR. It has better characters, better story, better dialogue, better overall atmosphere and higher replayability. What I especially liked is how Avellone changed HK-47 from a mindless sociopath to a more finesse-oriented assassin who uses the butterfly effect to achieve his goals. In other news, Mark Griskey's soundtrack r0x0rz.

I would agree if the ending hadn't been screwed up entirely. The whole story and all the multiple plot threads built towards a climactic finale that never came. And unlike Halo 2 or Half-Life 2, you know KOTOR 3 can't possibly continue the story because it can't have the same character.

I want to get it on with at least ONE of three babes gagging for The Exile, dammit! Just not Kreia, obviously...

I guess it comes down to whether you prefer flawed gems or just good games that were polished well.

As for KotOR 3, I don't think the existence of the MMO rules it out completely. Plenty of people want to see a single player sequel, and Luca$Art$ will take advantage of it some day. Unfortunately, da sekret projekt Obsidian is working on seems to be an RTS (Blimey!), so it may take a while.

"Not having an ending" is a pretty unforgivable flaw for a game that relies so heavily on story and character development! That is the only reason KOTOR1 sneaks ahead.
