Stacking Previews and Videos, or OMFG DOUBLE FINE ADVENTURE GAME!!! 24 Dec, 2010 / 6 comments

Stacking, Double Fine's latest digital-only title, is an adventure game with "a more immediate way of interacting with the adventure". Tim Schafer's team is making an adventure game. Excuse me, I just need to lie down for a second...

... Right, I'm back. Kotaku have a nice preview of the game, offering a really detailed look into exactly how the game is going to play.

But don't take just words for it, as GameTrailers have three new videos up covering the game's mechanics.

Oh, and while we're talking about Double Fine, for anyone who's played the Costume Quest expansion Grubbins on Ice, there's a strong possibility that there's going to be more DLC for that game as apparently it ends on a bit of a cliffhanger...

I though this was obvious? It's a character interaction/flavor heavy game where the core mechanic is mainly used for solving puzzles. Sounds like an adventure game to me. Player-direct control scheme like Grim or a Telltale game, just with a unique ability used for most of the puzzles.

The stacking mechanic kind of reminds me of the distaff in loom, actually. Something that probably won't be used in any other games, but still creates a lot of potential puzzle scenarios that wouldn't be possible otherwise.

Unique, yes. But I agree with Mario's comment. From what we can see so far it's not an adventure game. Just like DeathSpank isn't really a hybrid between Monkey Island and Diablo. Just like Psychonauts wasn't as adventure game.

I was attracted by the concept of Stacking from the very beginning. But what bugs me is that it looks like it will be incredibly easy and that the individual puzzles won't be really unique (they will be repeated in different places).

Also, I won't play if it won't show up on the PC.

But what is the game CALLED?

Edit: Right. Bizarre post caused me to overlook it.

You know, this is as much of an "adventure" game as the Psychonauts milkman conspiracy level. I'm extremely excited about this, but I don't think it's as responsible to say ADVENTURE with the implication of Day of Grim Throttle or something when it reality we're talking about something unique.

I'm not saying the tag adventure is even wrong, mind you, and I think this game looks nothing short of incredible. I am scratching my head, however, that you need to lay down as I see everything they've ever made to be adventuresque (not really a word).

What is making my head explode is that there's two more things hidden from us for now, and that's what's been ANNOUNCED.

The guys over at Giant Bomb also have a extended look at the game with Tim Schafer.
