Spankin' that Monkey at GDC 06 Mar, 2010, 09:28 / 22 comments

The first word on Monkey Island 2: The Special Edition has emerged from the muddy swamps. We don't usually report rumors, but we can report reporting on rumors. From Kotaku:
We've heard from sources that the game is due to be announced very soon, perhaps even next week at the Game Developer's Conference, and that like the first game's special edition, will contain all-new graphics and audio.

Unlike the first game, however, this one will be reaching a few more consumers, with versions planned for not just the Xbox 360, PC ad iPhone (like Monkey Island), but the PlayStation Network as well.
(Highlights by me.)

There's a lot to look forward to this GDC: Tim Schafer and Sean Vanaman will banter about the funny, Telltale will be there with "big news" (regarding Sam and Max 03? There's no Mr. Featherly in that, by the way), and finally there's the GDC awards that Brutal Legend got nominated in.

Lastly, there was a lot of clamoring yesterday after EA announced the list of consoles they'd be bringing Deathspank to - a list that excluded "PC". This does not mean a PC version is not coming. As EA's Jeff Green said yesterday: "DeathSpank: If you're freaking out about no PC version announce yet, stop freaking out. EA wants as many people as possible to play it..."

Maybe Telltale will announce Tales of Monkey Island for iPhone/iPod Touch? I'm not sure if the device can handle it, but Pocket Gamer has been posting this rumor for some time now:

I'm not talking about DeathSpank. The article was about MI2:SE.

Nice catch. I think that may refer to MI2, though.

    I'm sure it is.

I anxiously await to see how they tackle the well documented and speculated-over issues of the game's background art and soundtrack.

Also, it'll be really interesting to see if LEC and Telltale do some sort of joint announcement at GDC. LEC's MI2 announcement, for example, would make a good time for Telltale to pimp any MI-related project they might be doing. Likewise, LEC could ride off of any official Season 3 announcement and Season 2 retail launch with a carefully timed and cross-promoted Hit the Road re-release. It's actually pretty exciting to think of the possibilities that are now possible due to LEC and Telltale having some kind of relationship.

I honestly can't imagine Telltale announcing anything related to Monkey Island already. The previous season finished just a few months ago, and I can't see them doing anything else but Sam & Max right now (at least as far as the public is allowed to know). You're right though, this relationship is interesting, and a HtR-remake would certainly make sense right about now. I think Telltale's next Monkey project might coincide with the re-release of Curse or Escape rather than this one. It's just way, way too early.

Let's just hope they'll do the same for Maniac Mansion/DOTT. Or Indiana.

Oh man, I need a shower.

I'd peg a new Monkey game later this year, assuming that's the next thing they do. However, there's a rumor they're already working on something else, so I assume it's going to be Sam and Max -> Unknown -> Monkey. There's a few games to re-release between here and CMI, anyways, including DotT.

Well, yeah, Connors has been talking about a more serious, more current series for a while now, so I guess we'll get that before we get another Monkey Island. Telltale has also been dropping hints about them wanting to do more with Strong Bad. If I had to guess, I would say it's going to be S&M -> Serious Thing -> Strong Bad -> Monkey. Oh well, time will tell.

Yeah, even if LEC is done with special editions after this, they've still got to re-release the rest of their adventure catalog on Steam.

I hate to sound so negative again but honestly I pray that LucasArts don't do a MI2:SE. I'm still having difficulty sleeping after the first one. Telltale are more than welcome to do whatever they want but the Monkey Island IP should be taken out of LucasArts' hands as soon as possible.
  • Kroms on 06 Mar, 2010, 12:22…
Why? It's not like a remake will destroy the original - which, presumably, is just one click away. I appreciate the remake. It got a lot of my friends to try out the Monkey Island games - and most loved them.
  • Snugglecakes on 06 Mar, 2010, 12:53…
Fair point. I just see the first two games as being brilliant because of many things, one of which is attention to detail. Beautiful quality control is one of the pillars of the original monkey island games. They feel polished, finished, perfect. MI1:SE great as far as the general idea goes, and the music and voice work is great, but the graphical errors and omissions are inexcusable. I played halfway through it and then fired up the old version again, which is far better.

We've also now seen some amazing fan work on MI2, including that incredible 3D demo a while ago (Guy.brush I think his name was). It will be a cold day in hell (or 1992) when LucasArts themselves put out something even nearly as good as the fans could. If we could have the original graphics with voiceover, that would be 10/10. Just please don't let the current LEC artists loose on my beloved MI2 art. Please.

Omg! I knew that Mi2 would get a special edition this month (thanx to the leak from lucasarts in the retro gamer magazine)
  • Kroms on 06 Mar, 2010, 10:30…
    It's probably just an announcement.
  • AlfredJ on 06 Mar, 2010, 09:36…
Telltale will be at GDC? Great. I'm sort of surprised they haven't announced S&M season 3 yet, what with that pre-order forum appearing over a week ago.
  • Kroms on 06 Mar, 2010, 09:50…
They hid it. Haha, honestly, it's like the inverse of the Monkey announcement. That came out of nowhere, whereas we've already had a sizeable amount of info re:Sam and Max 03.
  • jp-30 on 06 Mar, 2010, 11:49…
Sam & max 3 hasn't been announced yet?

lol, such common knowledge. I guess that's one for the fans, being kept in the loop.
  • Kroms on 06 Mar, 2010, 12:21…
Well, not "officially". There hasn't been a press release.
