Some site should really archive these 27 Aug, 2009, 13:56 / 16 comments

Steve Purcell has posted yet another bit of concept art from the canceled animated Monkey Island flick. Hopefully this hungry fellow settles whatever debate that has sprung up about the presence of mythological creatures in the MI universe. Who knew a few mer-folk would get so many people's earlobes uncurled?*

* You can't prove that my sly reference to The Great Cow Race won't cause Bone 3 to exist.

Update: Steve Purcell is a freaking genius. Way too cool.

I certainly hope that last one isn't a spoiler for the ending of TMI...

I think these were all done pre-CMI, so don't worry.

What? No way! Purcell is not involved in TMI outside of the box-art. It seems to be a spoiler for the ending to the movie, though. Still, that project is deader than LeChuck, so no harm done.

Oh, I just saw that Steve answered my post on his blog, and he confirmed that it's art from years ago.
    Sorry, my bad.
Continue, there's nothing to see here.

Well, he did say in his last post that it's the Leviathan, and the third chapter is called Lair of the Leviathan.
Plus he said that it's movie concept art about a painting he showed in another post. Not about these.
Although I don't think Telltale would let him post concept art for a still unfinished game.

Am I the only one who rather enjoyed the Merfolk? Especially compared to something like a Sushi Bar turning up on Melee...

I guess I'm the only one that enjoyed the LUA Bar in Monkey Island 4. I thought it was funny because the programmers were using LUA instead of SCUMM as a scripting language in that game. :)

I enjoyed the actual reference of the LUA Bar, but not the actual bar. Maybe it would have been better if they named it the GrimE bar...

No. Almost every comment I've seen thinks the Merfolk are a pretty cool addition to the franchise. I heartily agree.

I certainly enjoyed the merfolk, and I suspect those who didn't are a vocal minority.

lol, I played The Longest Journey, wich has a lot of this stuff, between chapter 1 and 2, so I didn't realy notice anything off.

Finished chapter 2, Personally I'm divided.

I prefer voodoo over mythological sea creatures but seeing that one is neither more believable then the other I don't think it's worth getting worked up over. I think the reason it's seen as taboo is that it's never turned up in MI mythology until now.

Given that so many elements of TOMI is brand new in terms of narrative and we are exploring such new territory that they definitely deserve the benefit of the doubt. So impressed with the character progression of the "main 3" that it pales into insignificance.

Hmm, can't find any threads decrying the mer-folk, Jason.
  • Remi O on 25 Aug, 2009, 15:15…
You must not be looking. First thread I looked at over at the TTG forums had a thread linking to this review:

"The addition of the Merfolk is probably the biggest blasphemous thing to happen to the Monkey Island franchise since it was created. While a good backstory is delivered on their existence and how they fit into the story you can not get over the fact that they do not fit well within the universe. Sure we have Zombies, Ghosts, a talking Skull named Murray (who has yet to make an appearance), and all around craziness that we know and love in Monkey Island but these Mermaids are not a good addition to the story. "

Plenty of people in the thread agree with it.
  • Kroms on 25 Aug, 2009, 20:02…
Yeah, I kind of posted that prematurely.

I still think that the merpeople were a great addition. Most people seem to agree.

Hope not. There's never been anything saying there CAN'T be mythological stuff in the Monkey games. Especially since they've always been full of ghost/voodoo apparitions anyway.
