Sam & Max trailer 11 May, 2006 / Comments: 42
Why are you reading this when you could be checking out the brand spanking new Sam & Max trailer? I mean seriously.
Oh, and to editorialize; it does get the Remi's seal of approval. Even the voices. What do you think? Watch then comment.
Im not giving the game any shit, just that the graphics seem very "alpha/beta stage" when it comes to textures and modeling.
Or are they intentionally going for that look?
Not that Max has alot of modeling or textures, he is pretty white, but I didnt see any furry details or anything.
So its just beta models/textures right?
Very nice to see SamnMax alive. :)
As for the short episodic approach, I think it might really benefit the franchise. I'm one of the few who didn't really like Hit the Road, despite the great characters and dialogue. The story just REALLY fell apart for me very early in the game. Having shorter episodes may be a better fit for these guys.
Maybe they should call it "Sam and Max: Fun Sized"
I personally prefer the voices from Hit the Road, which I believe are the same voices in the tv show as well. The voices aren't bad, they're just not as good, in my opinion. Especially Max's...it just seems less like Max. Less enthusiastic or passionate or something. Not sure how to describe it.
Though the dialogue is not terribly, it still didn't seem to me as sharp as the dialogue from the show or the comic books or the game.
The thing that bothers me most of all is the Max model's mouth. Something about it just seems kind of odd. It might ahve something to do with smoothing that was added to the mesh. I liked the one in the lucas arts trailer better, and some I've seen done by fans.
I'm aware that this is basically a commercial, and it's probably rather preliminary work. I'm not complaining, and it shows promise, I'm just hoping for improvement. Some better dialogue, models, and voices.
Sure, I'd agree with you that the voices aren't as good as in Hit the Road, but they're (pressumably) cheaper actors, and they're never going to get people who sound exactly like the old guys. I think they're different enough so that most people won't be comparing them all the time. Get used to change!
The context of the trailer doesn't really lend itself to "sharp" lines - you try saying something witty when you're just telling people about game tap and episodic content! Considering that, the dialouge was of a very high level I thought.
And as for Max's mouth... well, I think the teeth are less sharp, but I don't see why that's a biggy.
I think it will get better with more viewings... it certainly has done for me. Anything I didn't like about it was, I think, just resistence to change.
I think I know what it is about the Max model though. It's the way the "lips"(or possibly anti-lips" protrude from the teeth. In the 2d animation the teeth are flush with the lips. In the telltale model they the teeth are set in from the lips, and that makes his head look less like Max and more like a bleached skull. A little less Max, a little more Murry.
That's the way I feel about it.
Your best bet is to wait until Autumn/Fall, which is most probably when a more relevant trailer will come out that includes material from the actual game. Making a decision based on a short teaser trailer is, for want of a better word, stupid.
Also this traler is basicaly an advert for GameTap and has no gameplay footage in it (because they're probably not that far along in game production), but if you wish to pass on the game after a one minute add I guess that's your loss.
More downloading bandwidth for me...
And yes, passing on the game because it doesn't show gameplay that doesn't exist is a bit strange.
Oh, and did anyone else notice that the exclamation changes randomly on refresh?
Hmmm.
Sam N' Max: They're humor doesn't seem anywhere near as 'edgy' as I remember it. But now I'm all growed up. Was it always like that?
Heh.
No seriously, I would say the little dialogue that was there was certainly as good as anything in the original game.
Yet everyone here disagrees.
But I'm now watching the trailer for the 3rd time, and both voices are excellent and I want to be playing the episodic game NOW!
I'm happy.
I may be dreaming, but I think David Nowlin (Fone Bone's voice) is Max's new voice actor, just at a higher pitch.
Ciao
Well it lived up to my expectations, the only thing I'm worried about is being able to get it straight away if it's released on GameTap as I'm in the UK.
At any rate I've waited what, 13 years for new Sam & Max goodness? An extra couple of weeks isn't going to kill me if there is a gap.
In an unrelated story, Look who decided to show! Yes, the CSI 3 Dimensions of Murder web site is quite cool, if only about two months late.
