Hmm, this game can be played on a graphicscard from 2002?

Im not giving the game any shit, just that the graphics seem very "alpha/beta stage" when it comes to textures and modeling.
Or are they intentionally going for that look?

Not that Max has alot of modeling or textures, he is pretty white, but I didnt see any furry details or anything.
So its just beta models/textures right?

Very nice to see SamnMax alive. :)

I think it's pretty good. Sam's voice works well, and Max is... satisfactory. Hopefully the actors can put a little bit more energy into the final product.

As for the short episodic approach, I think it might really benefit the franchise. I'm one of the few who didn't really like Hit the Road, despite the great characters and dialogue. The story just REALLY fell apart for me very early in the game. Having shorter episodes may be a better fit for these guys.

Maybe they should call it "Sam and Max: Fun Sized"
  • Thrik on 14 May, 2006, 02:03…
Yeah, I think having punchy storylines that're frequent would work the best. It'll also give Telltale a lot of creativity when it comes to the storylines if they can pump out a number of individual ones in succession, as opposed to spending years on just one.

First of all, I have to say that I enjoyed it a whole lot more the second time. Maybe I felt less critical. After repeated viewings I might learn to love it, but I'm not going to experiment with that right now.

I personally prefer the voices from Hit the Road, which I believe are the same voices in the tv show as well. The voices aren't bad, they're just not as good, in my opinion. Especially Max's...it just seems less like Max. Less enthusiastic or passionate or something. Not sure how to describe it.

Though the dialogue is not terribly, it still didn't seem to me as sharp as the dialogue from the show or the comic books or the game.

The thing that bothers me most of all is the Max model's mouth. Something about it just seems kind of odd. It might ahve something to do with smoothing that was added to the mesh. I liked the one in the lucas arts trailer better, and some I've seen done by fans.

I'm aware that this is basically a commercial, and it's probably rather preliminary work. I'm not complaining, and it shows promise, I'm just hoping for improvement. Some better dialogue, models, and voices.

I think you're being way too picky...

Sure, I'd agree with you that the voices aren't as good as in Hit the Road, but they're (pressumably) cheaper actors, and they're never going to get people who sound exactly like the old guys. I think they're different enough so that most people won't be comparing them all the time. Get used to change!

The context of the trailer doesn't really lend itself to "sharp" lines - you try saying something witty when you're just telling people about game tap and episodic content! Considering that, the dialouge was of a very high level I thought.

And as for Max's mouth... well, I think the teeth are less sharp, but I don't see why that's a biggy.

I think it will get better with more viewings... it certainly has done for me. Anything I didn't like about it was, I think, just resistence to change.
  • VSTM on 23 May, 2006, 20:01…
    You may be right.

I think I know what it is about the Max model though. It's the way the "lips"(or possibly anti-lips" protrude from the teeth. In the 2d animation the teeth are flush with the lips. In the telltale model they the teeth are set in from the lips, and that makes his head look less like Max and more like a bleached skull. A little less Max, a little more Murry.

That's the way I feel about it.

I love watching the cute little guy pull his gun out from wherever he's pulling his gun out in the silhouettes. But he should get a new voice.
  • MonkeyMania on 12 May, 2006, 21:38…
The voices in Hit the Road were at least distinguishable. The voices in this sound like the same guy. I sure hope it improves.
  • Thrik on 12 May, 2006, 13:42…
It's worth remembering that the game hasn't been in development for very long at all, and work has probably barely begun on a lot of it; therefore, a trailer can't realistically include much from the game itself as it isn't there to begin with.

Your best bet is to wait until Autumn/Fall, which is most probably when a more relevant trailer will come out that includes material from the actual game. Making a decision based on a short teaser trailer is, for want of a better word, stupid.
  • valkian on 12 May, 2006, 16:46…
I basically and escencially, agree with you.
  • nahmed on 12 May, 2006, 08:29…
Calling it a trailer is a joke. It is a GameTap advertisement starring Sam and Max, and it is quite boring as being an advertisement it is also not fun :-(
  • MonkeyMania on 12 May, 2006, 05:15…
I laughed more at Lucasart's trailer and their voices were better. I'll pass on this one. Darn you Lucasarts!!
  • jp-30 on 12 May, 2006, 07:40…
Th evoices in the trailer may not be final. And of course the voices in LucasRts trailer were the same actors as Hit the Road.

Also this traler is basicaly an advert for GameTap and has no gameplay footage in it (because they're probably not that far along in game production), but if you wish to pass on the game after a one minute add I guess that's your loss.

    More downloading bandwidth for me...
  • Remi O on 12 May, 2006, 13:56…
I've also heard a rumor that what was recorded for the LEC game was less than satisfying.

And yes, passing on the game because it doesn't show gameplay that doesn't exist is a bit strange.
  • Udvarnoky on 12 May, 2006, 14:25…
Where'd you hear that? That guy back in November 2003 from Something Awful who visited one of the sessions seemed to think it was high-quality.
  • Noyb on 12 May, 2006, 04:45…
    *drools in anticipation*
Oh, and did anyone else notice that the exclamation changes randomly on refresh?
  • Carlius on 12 May, 2006, 04:04…
Much Better than expected I'd say
  • ThunderPeel2001 on 11 May, 2006, 21:04…
Max's voice is WRONG :( Sam's is ok though.

    Hmmm.

Sam N' Max: They're humor doesn't seem anywhere near as 'edgy' as I remember it. But now I'm all growed up. Was it always like that?
  • Metallus on 11 May, 2006, 23:14…
Edgy is relative. While Hit the Road involved the use of Sam saying "hell" and "damn" and stuff, that game never showed Sam and Max's guns, which were nearly ever-present in the comic books. But there they were at the end of this new trailer...though it remains to be seen if they'll actually be an important part of the new episodes.

    Heh.
  • Udvarnoky on 11 May, 2006, 22:10…
    ...it was a minute long.
  • Remi O on 11 May, 2006, 22:17…
Yet they didn't kill anybody. :(

No seriously, I would say the little dialogue that was there was certainly as good as anything in the original game.
  • Shmargin on 11 May, 2006, 17:41…
I think the voice thing is funny. Cause it goes to show how its all a matter of opinion, cause when I first heard the voices, I thought Max's sounded good, and Sam's was kinda eh.

    Yet everyone here disagrees.

But I'm now watching the trailer for the 3rd time, and both voices are excellent and I want to be playing the episodic game NOW!
  • itchythesamurai on 11 May, 2006, 20:28…
Shmargin, what you just said sums up my opinion completely.
  • valkian on 11 May, 2006, 17:40…
I really like it, it has the true Sam & Max spirit.
  • pheeph on 11 May, 2006, 16:57…
I like the trailer. The voice acting is okay, but I'll let it slip
  • The Tingler on 11 May, 2006, 16:02…
"Good thing I know a shortcut through the murky stuff of the human psyche!"

    I'm happy.
  • The Tingler on 11 May, 2006, 16:03…
Max's voice sounds... familiar somehow. Anyone know who the voice actors are?
  • Diduz on 11 May, 2006, 18:16…
Hi! First post. Diduz from Lucasdelirium here (the Italian guy who "scored" the interview with Peter McConnell ;-)).

I may be dreaming, but I think David Nowlin (Fone Bone's voice) is Max's new voice actor, just at a higher pitch.
    Ciao
  • The Tingler on 11 May, 2006, 18:17…
I'm sure whoever it is is in the Bone games... it might be Fone! I'll listen again.
  • Gabez on 11 May, 2006, 16:26…
I dunno, but I thought that Sam's voice reminded me a little of Captain Haddock in the Tintin cartoons. Probably just me.
  • Thriftweed on 11 May, 2006, 15:59…
That really is amazing, the voices are great and the animation is well done.
Well it lived up to my expectations, the only thing I'm worried about is being able to get it straight away if it's released on GameTap as I'm in the UK.
  • Gabez on 11 May, 2006, 16:27…
Well it's being released on Telltale as well, so I assume everyone will get it at the same time.
  • jp-30 on 12 May, 2006, 07:43…
There may be a lag between GameTap and the downloadable version. Telltale are yet to negotiate that, but it wouldn't surprise me considering GameTap are co-producing the series.

At any rate I've waited what, 13 years for new Sam & Max goodness? An extra couple of weeks isn't going to kill me if there is a gap.
  • Gabez on 11 May, 2006, 15:57…
Heh, yeah, that trailer definitely gets the Gabzo seal of aproval too, though I agree that Max's voice isn't its strong point.
  • chuzwuzza on 11 May, 2006, 15:41…
I think Sam's voice is right on the money. Max's on the other hand... I don't know. It seems forced. But then, this is just a trailer with no real content :)
  • Udvarnoky on 11 May, 2006, 15:40…
Was I the only one who noticed that while they were traveling through the murky stuff of the human psyche, some familiar items floated by? Look out for the honeycomb, water bucket, and cheese sandwhich inventory items from Bone.
  • counting_pine on 12 May, 2006, 13:16…
Is it just me, or is one of the Maxes flipping you off?
  • Udvarnoky on 11 May, 2006, 15:41…
    Sandwich. It's sandwich, dammit.
  • Gabez on 11 May, 2006, 16:25…
That's one mistake too many! You're fired.
  • Udvarnoky on 11 May, 2006, 15:29…
    The trailer is awesome.

In an unrelated story, Look who decided to show! Yes, the CSI 3 Dimensions of Murder web site is quite cool, if only about two months late.
  • vdawning on 11 May, 2006, 15:26…
Sam's voice I can live with... Max's... well, it'll take some getting used to at the very least. The animations are great though. Can't wait!
  • Thrik on 11 May, 2006, 15:26…
Those voices are surprisingly ace. The trailer's good, too!
