Sam & Max hit Xbox Live 20 Jun, 2009 / Comments: 12

Yesterday was the long-awaited release of Sam & Max: Season 1 (now dubbed Sam & Max Save the World to make it a bit less creepy to general gamers). The whole thing can be purchased for 1600 Microsoft Points, and perks of this version include hi-def visuals, widescreen support (also added to the Wii release but still not for PC) and achievements. I'm not sure what kind of control system it uses, whether it's been converted to something similar to Wallace & Gromit or if they've just left it point 'n click on a controller, like CSI: Hard Evidence or the Nintendo port of Maniac Mansion.

Sam & Max: Season 2 (now under the moniker Sam & Max Through Time and Space) will also make it to Xbox Live at some undisclosed time, and its retail releases for PC and Wii are still expected to be out by the year's end at the hands of Atari (taking over from Dreamcatcher/JoWood with Season 1).

Might buy that this week :-D Hate the ugly Wii version I have, would rather use the controller and have nice visuals.

Wait a minute, ATARI? So nowhere apart from the US is getting the retail version?

Not sure how you'd draw that conclusion seeing as Atari distributes way beyond the US - a fact that can be learned just by checking their website. Hell, if I'm not mistaken the Atari that exists today is based in Europe.

You are mistaken. Atari Europe was successfully driven into the ground by ex-Sony man Phil Harrison, and now no longer exists - which is the reason the Ghostbusters game is now a Sony exclusive in Europe. Atari US is now the main and only branch.

Sam and Max season 2 is on the UK amazon site with a July 31st release date. According to the description its being distributed by Atari. Play.com has the same information. Unless they are both wrong, we'll see the game in europe

In any event, the press release that announced the Atari/Telltale deal several months ago cited Sam & Max Season 2 as a "worldwide" release.

I don't know what Atari is a subsidiary of nowadays, I just know when I go to atari.com I see a choice of like fifteen different languages for its website as well as something about a Keynote Presentation in London. Even the most cursory of glances would seem to indicate that they're not a US exclusive company.

As Serge said, I've played a bit and it's straight point-n-click. The graphics seem sharper, but the demo seemed awfully stuttery.

Yes, the whole season =o) And I finally get to play longer than episode 2. Can't bring myself to play anything on PC anymore, even though I bought the first season for that platform too a long time ago =oP

    And yeah, it's point'n'click-on-a-controller.

PnC controller combo? Ewwww... Surely that's pretty painful?
  • The Tingler on 21 Jun, 2009, 11:27…
It does feel a bit awkward, yes.
  • Serge on 21 Jun, 2009, 19:52…
I'm actually OK with that scheme. Maybe because my first LucasArts game was Maniac Mansion on a C64, using a joystick for point'n'click... =o)

The WHOLE season for 1600 points?! That's an amazing bargain!
