Sam and Max games on sale 25 May, 2011 / 8 comments

(Thanks to Threepwood4Life from the forums for this news story. Again.)

Telltale's Sam and Max games are on sale on Steam. It's a 66% reduction off the original prices, which means Season One and Season Two go for $10.20 individually, The Devil's Playhouse for $11.20, or all three for $17.00.

A bargain. I know this is blasphemy to some, but I've come to believe The Devil's Playhouse tops even nostalgia-soaked Hit the Road. It is (in my opinion) destined to be regarded as a classic, and - unless you're one of those people who can't play a Sam and Max game that doesn't have some song in it or an overdose of returning characters - you shouldn't miss out on it, especially now.

    I didn't alter my comment.

Sorry about suggesting that then. I guess I must have been really tired when I read it - I didn't register some stuff and confused the rest.

Ah yes, it seems I did indeed misread which was the more popular game in the poll, though it also seems like Kroms edited his comment a bit since I've read it.

Anyway, to not drag this, I'll definitely try out the much lauded TDP once I find a good price offer. 17€ is too much for me to risk it right now. + I prefer to buy it directly from Telltale.

I didn't alter my comment. But anyways, yeah. TDP is pretty great. :) You're missing out, especially since you love a good story.

Seems a bit pot-kettle-black to say that after complaining about somebody's inabilities to properly defend his arguments. Plus I think you misread it: Hit the Road won that poll outright.

Personally I found Hit the Road better than season one and about equal to season two, but that's me.

    Anyway, $17! Steal!

Personally, the only times I got really frustrated or (even worse) bored with Sam & Max it was playing episodes of Seasons 1 & 2. Those experiences were lightyears behind Hit the Road in every way.

I still haven't played TDP and I'm all for strong "game A is objectively better than game B because of this and that" opinions, but please don't argue something is of better quality because of it being more popular. Such arguments don't defend any kind of statements very well. Personally, the only times I got really frustrated or (even worse) bored with Sam & Max it was playing episodes of Seasons 1 & 2. Nothing wrong with "Hit the Road" -- nice writing and some bizarre locations and all -- but yes, "The Devil's Playhouse" is clearly a better game.

Hit the Road is hardly nostalgia-soaked. Some players' heads might be nostalgia-soaked, but it doesn't take anything away from Hit the Road and its moments of extreme brilliance.

It had brilliant moments, no doubt, but I think a lot of people overlook its flaws because of rose-tinted spectacles. I watched my girlfriend re-play it recently and realized how impossibly *vague* it can be, and those moments of brilliance are often harmed by the sheer amount of pure frustration invested in actually getting there.

The Devil's Playhouse is superior. Objectively. But we took a vote on this and it got half the votes that "Hit the Road" did, which - I mean, look. You can say Hit the Road is better, sure, but *twice* the number of votes that TDP got is a little insane. Hit the Road is riddled with obscurity and drags on a bit. TDP is a little inconsistent around the middle part, but pretty great.

I'd also say Season Two, with the THEM thing, was better, though I won't defend that statement.

Damn Steam, the dollars turn to euro if you live in Europe and consequently this offer doesn't seem like such a bargain anymore!
