Sam and Max Season Three rumors, bunnies 27 Nov, 2009, 13:25 / 18 comments

I've found that two kinds of people who read Mixnmojo: those who wish they were bunnies, and those like me who wish they were dogs. So you will be happy to know that I've been trying to find out when Sam and Max Season Three is released, so that we may have fulfill our wish of being dogs again; here's a mix of rumors, speculation, and fact.

I think that Season Three will launch in either December of this year, or January 2009 2010. There's a small rumor going around that Chuck Jordan is leading the project, and that Mike Stemmle is working on an episode (four, if some article I can't find again Giygas found again was correct). We know that Telltale are looking for a new IP to launch in May/June (citation needed; but I'm paraphrasing Dan Connors), and are, in the meantime, working on something.

It wasn't unreasonable to conclude it was Sam and Max. I didn't want to post my admittedly weak speculation until I had some confirmation; Dan Connors confirmed (see 8:30, although the entire interview is worth watching).

I should remind you that they'll be dropping the point-n-click interface of Seasons One and Two, and instead will be adapting something else. Possibly click-n-drag?

So there you go. Speculation, rumor, speculation, reported. I feel like I should be on Fox News. Anyways, you're probably excited and so am I; even if you're not, remember that Mixnmojo is the Citizen Kane of speculation. Or the Citizen Kane of being Fox News. And that people who claim to hate things really feel otherwise, like self-hating Jews or internalized homophobes. So if you hate Sam and Max, I can only assume you hate-but-actually-like bunnies, because you couldn't be one when you were always limited to playing as Sam. So much for wish fulfillment. Are you a self-hating bunny lover? I implore you look at this photo and relax. We can both put our dog/bunny differences aside and look at the photo. I can relax looking at the girl, whereas you can relax looking at the bunny.

I think one of the main bits in that interview is that Telltale have been in talks with Tex Murphy creator/rights holders Aaron Conners and Chris Jones.

I've never played a Tex Murphy game, but from what I've read it has a similar vibe to Blade Runner. And I love Blade Runner.

"in either December of this year, or January 2010."

What leads you to this conclusion? Seems way too soon to me. I think eventually Tellale will be wanting at least 1 new episode each month, but I don't have any inkling Sam & Max s03e01 will be ready the month after ToMI wraps up.

The way I see it is, Telltale are working on something, and are fishing for another thing to be released next year.

DECEMBER 2008 - Tales of MI
    JANUARY 2009 - ??
    FEBRUARY 2009 - ??
    MARCH 2009 - ??
    APRIL 2009 - ??
MAY 2009 - "We're looking for IP to launch"
JUNE 2009 - "We're looking for IP to launch"

Considering that they already know who is doing what episode and that the writing/design usually takes a month, it's not unreasonable to assume that the game launches in the timeframe between the May/June game (probably June) and TMI5's launch. Sam and Max, Season Three is in production, and, assuming that it is 5 episodes, will probably launch in December/January to keep a monthly episode all year round going.

I get what you're saying, but in that not-too-old interview, Connors said that S&M Season 3 was still in pre-production. It doesn't take them long to whip out an episode, but I assume their production schedule necessitates getting a pretty big head-start on a season's worth of assets. Sure hope you're right, though!

    I'm betting on March.

Kroms, there's a chance that the last paragraph in this post may actually be the most oblique thing you have ever written.

I made it a bit easier to read.

    Summary:
Do you hate Sam and Max? If so, you must hate bunnies. Sometimes people who hate things actually like them/want to be like them, and hence I can only assume you hate Sam and Max because it didn't satisfy your desire to play as the bunny (Max). Which means you love bunnies. Let us relax and look at a photo of a playboy bunny: I will look at the girl, and you will look at the bunny.

That's the condensed version of it. I'm sure I missed a point.

Oh, I got it the first time. I just thought it was funny. :>
  • Giygas on 27 Nov, 2009, 15:04…
How can they launch a game in the past?
  • Kroms on 27 Nov, 2009, 15:30…
Obviously, May/June of 2010.I really wish I could find the interview, but I cleared out my history this morning.
  • jp-30 on 27 Nov, 2009, 18:34…
Ahem. "I think that Season Three will launch in either December of this year, or January 2009."

And Kroms reclaims the Crown of Stupid.

Thanks for that, but no. They very specifically said, "We're looking for something to start up in May or June of next year." Wish I could find it. Maybe it was Kevin Bruner...
  • Giygas on 27 Nov, 2009, 16:18…
Ah, OK. I thought you meant the thing about Mike Stemmle.
  • Kroms on 27 Nov, 2009, 19:25…
Oh, shit biscuit. I just realised what you were saying. I'm x100 stupid. Sorry. Post updated and credited. Thanks, Giygas!
