Rogue Leader, RS II 11 May, 2001, 08:32 / 22 comments

It appears that everyone else on Mojo staff is lazy, or I was assigned official E3-updater without knowing it, as nobody else around here caught this earlier... Anyway,

Today's LucasArts E3 announcement is, once again, a Star Wars title, but this is one I must admit I am really excited about. The game, Star Wars: Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron 2, is, as the name suggests, a Gamecube-bound sequel to the popular N64 and PC title Rogue Squadron 1. Why am I excited about it? Because it is classic Star Wars (non episode-1), and because it looks so cool! I know the Gamecube gets knocked a lot but damn!

The game was essentially announced at Nintendo's Spaceworld expo earlier this year when snips from a playtest were shown during the Gamecube's introduction. If you haven't seen them yet ... drool, and drool. Note that all that footage is live in engine, not prerendered.

How many of you will help me storm the offices of LEC? I'll do it myself if it means a Sam n' Max 2

Hmm... My previous post belongs to a different thread, but hey - who cares?

I remember playing 8-bit Atari version of Star Wars and I bet it was the most exciting trench run in my life ;-) Of course I'm looking forward to play some VR trench run in the future but the first experience is the best, by the means of excitement. What I'm trying to say is Star Wars games can be really great, as long as there's an original idea behind them. What's happening now is just cloning. And I don't think there's going to be any final panel. But If I'm wrong, it better not be Star Wars. Everybody's had enough of it and the next year doesn't seem any better, with Episode 2 on the way.

@#%^ you LucasArts! And @#%^ you George for making Star Wars, cause if you didnt we wouldnt have all these games!

If Star Wars was never made would you even be at this site? No because it, along with MI, DOTT, Sam & Max, Grim Fandango etc etc etc wouldn't have ever been made. American Graffiti was a good flick and all, but I think the merchandising tie ins from that alone would have trouble funding all of Georgie's side projects (for isntance LucasArts).

Not forgetting the money-spinner AMAZE which was 'Howard the Duck'. That alone must have bankrolled, oh, Yoda Stories. NB: More American Graffiti = crud

Ever hear of Indiana Jones? And how about shutting up? Im just blowing off steam.
  • Swordmaster on 16 May, 2001, 09:00…
But you can speculate whether Indiana Jones was ever created if Star Wars wasn't as successful.

Hee! Sorry, no hard feelings. I was just joshin' ya.

    Calm down, dude.

Hmmm... i have to admit... RS2 does look very nice... But HOW many times can LEC put the death start battles in games without them all seeming the same? IE X-Wing X-Wing Alliance Rogue Squadron Star Wars Arcade Game Rogue Squadon 2 Rebel Assault See what i'm getting at? I probably missed one too...
  • Narrative on 11 May, 2001, 18:31…
I mean, don't get me wrong... I really do love the trench run... The first time I went down it to defeat the death star in X-Wing I was like... "WOAH! Total adreniline, I feel like i'm in the movie" but everytime I go down it in the last or bonus level of some new space combat game, it just feels less and less special each time. Anyone else agree? On a totally different note, what day does everyone think the final panel will be? 12th? 15? 17th?
  • Jake on 11 May, 2001, 19:32…
I agree that the trench run does get tiring but this is the first time I have looked at it and had trouble discerning the game from at least the 80's VHS copies of the films.

dont give up hope there are NO adventure games to be showcased by LucasArts at E?, but simon jeffery has requested an interview with us there. perhaps this is to reinstall faith that they are working on Adventure titles
  • GregD on 11 May, 2001, 16:34…
Yeah no doubt he will be announcing the fact he is working with LEC on... Star Wars: The adventure game! :p
  • Remi O on 11 May, 2001, 16:30…
Here's to hoping... Have fun at E?. :)

Okay, I'm slightly curious about the last square on the board. It doesn't reveal when you point at it, nor is part of it uncovered to show part of a date like the others were. Worst case scenario: This is it. No more games are to be announced. Best case scenario: LucasArts pulls the same trick it did last year, with five games being revealed at once. This would be Jedi Power Battles for GameBoy, The as yet unnamed BioWare RPG, the real Jedi Knight sequel, Star Wars Galaxies with in game screenshots, and the next adventure game. ;-) (Well, I can always dream, can't I?)

Has LEC turned into LucasFilm's bitch or something? Whatever happend to original ideas?
  • RappScallion on 11 May, 2001, 11:54…
    OK. LEC's dead. Now what?
  • GregD on 11 May, 2001, 11:25…
