Return of Monkey Island 5 Speculation 20 Feb, 2004 / Comments: 50

PC Gamer UK is at it again. Arguably, they've been hit and miss with their LucasArts predictions, so you never know, but take this one with a big fat grain of salt: According to The Scumm Bar, the latest PC Gamer UK has started up Monkey Island 5 rumors yet again:
"LucasArts informers let the monkey out of the bag: there is, apparently, a fifth Monkey Island game in production. The adventure genre continues to cheat death."
Yikes. Or perhaps, Hooray? I'm sure you guys will feel one way or the other about it. There's also an obligatory blurry scan (and good scan) from the issue of PCG, if you need proof.

I think there is a possibility this is true based on this:

Mixnmojo has interviewed Simon Jeffery the last three years at E3. The first two years he said that there was "no doubt" that there would be more Monkey Island games.

Last year's interview, which we didn't ever publish because he resigned during our downtime, we asked him again about Monkey Island 5. If I remember right, he said something like, "Ask me again next year."

Of course, he may have just been telling us what we wanted to hear... or after he resigned, if there was a game in the works, it might have been scrapped. Or maybe MI5 is actually in production and we'll find out about it in May.

    Weee, speculation is fun.

Don't forget, that was the same interview where he said "yes I believe Clint Bajakian is doing the music to Sam & Max 2" (which is 100% false, the music for that game is being done internally). I'd take most things Simon said in that interview with a grain of salt. Of course, in the past 6 months things could have changed a bit either way, so who knows.
  • Gabez on 21 Feb, 2004, 19:18…
Yeah, but the key word there is "Simon Jeffery". Okay, so that's two words. Shut-up.

Also do you reckon that, pressuming this rumour is based on fact, we will hear about it in May? How early do LucasArts announce their games?
  • black_sheep on 22 Feb, 2004, 05:29…
    first of April i think

    I'm looking forward to E3 :D

I tried to count the number of times rumors like these appeared in PC Zone or PC Gamer but fell asleep.
  • Gabez on 20 Feb, 2004, 20:22…
Well, all the previous Mi5 rumours have been in PC Zone, and they, er, sometimes say things that aren't exactly true.

PC Gamer are much less fun but probably more reliable, and this one *seems* to be more than mere speculation. That said, even if Mi5 is in production there's no guarantee that it'll ever see the light of day.

OH MAN I AM SO EXCITED

Or just making up the numbers in the comments. :(

Full 3D this time? The new S&M looks pretty darn good so far...

Bring on the point 'n click. Navigating GF and EMI with a gamepad is like playing URU 2: Basket Kicker!

Maniac Mansion 3! Maniac Mansion 3! Maniac Mansion 3! :-)

The PC Gamer link there was acutally a hit, as they updated those games to work with XP. ?

With that said, PC Gamer is known for... making speculations... at times.

    (not DOTT)

    Sam and Max 2!

And as the Voodoo lady said QUOTE: UNBREAKABLE FIVE GAME CONTRACT : UNQUOTE
  • Metallus on 21 Feb, 2004, 04:12…
They didn't specify whether it was a Monkey Island game. When they make that LucasArts kart-style racing game with all the original characters, they'll probably stick her in.
  • Udvarnoky on 21 Feb, 2004, 12:55…
I'm telling you, it's a new Maniac Mansion game.
  • bgbennyboy on 20 Feb, 2004, 18:48…
And as I say. ITS ONLY A GAME, NOT THE BIBLE.
  • Jake on 20 Feb, 2004, 20:22…
Um, I think it is the bible. What church do you attend?
  • Huz on 21 Feb, 2004, 13:14…
If the mormons can give an extension to the bible away for FREE (with NO OBLIGATION), there's no reason why LucasArts shouldn't be able to, man.
  • Samandmax221 on 21 Feb, 2004, 14:19…
Well it certianly is'nt a loom game
  • Deepthought2k on 21 Feb, 2004, 23:19…
Well, thats obvious- Bobbin goes to Manhatten didn't sell that well even in Europe.

Yeah. They were warned those kinds of cross-overs wouldn't work. Whatever sequels are in the pipeline let's hope they don't end up like this one.
  • Remi O on 22 Feb, 2004, 13:17…
I don't think a lot of people get this one anymore. ;~
  • BooJaka on 22 Feb, 2004, 14:21…
You mean like the bit in MI1 where you go to the cloud city after going through the tree stump?
