Republic Commando reviewed by internet 26 Feb, 2005 / Comments: 5

A couple of you might care, but Republic Commando, currently LucasArts' only internally-developed title, has been reviewed by Gamespot (8.7) and IGN (8.5). Both reviews are pretty favorable (citing weak multiplayer and a short singleplayer campaign as the big weaknesses), though the IGN reviewer seems to be a little unfair to the game. It seems he would have preferred that LucasArts made the game completely differently, and repeatedly marks Republic Commando down because it's not that other game he wanted in his head.

Gotta love that solid reviewing tactic of comparing the game to the fantasy of the game that never existed that's all in your head and perfect. *snort*

I have nothing against Star Wars games, I just have a thing against crap games. The fact that "Star Wars game" and "crap game" usually go hand in hand isn't lost on me. But, if a game is good, or at least mostly enjoyable, I'm not going to dump on it on Mojo just because it's got "Star Wars" in the title.

I'm all for subjectivity in reviews, your personal experience with the game, etc, but when you get things like this:
I really think that Republic Commando could have balanced deeper tactical gameplay with an easy interface. Select soldier, point at ground, tell to go there and snipe, be done with it. I'm not saying that this should be Full Spectrum Warrior in the Star Wars universe, it certainly should remain focused on action, but there also has to be a tactical challenge.

Particularly annoying are the ghosts of soldiers that appear when aiming the reticule at one of these set locations. This is just too far for me. Yeah, it shows that someone can stand there and after the ghost turns green that someone listened and will soon take up that position, but it's just so bizarre.
I just feel he's gone beyond reviewing the game, and instead, he's putting the game up in a battle against his personal ideas for how he would make his own squad-based Star Wars title, which isn't terribly fair in any review.

    That's IGN for you.

They haven't been credible since 1999.
