Red Tails flies into theaters 20 Jan, 2012 / 16 comments

Red Tails, the first non-franchise Lucasfilm production since 1994, is now playing nationwide in the U.S. and Canada. The long-in-gestation passion project for George Lucas, who probably influenced the result beyond what his story and producer credits suggest, is inspired by the real life exploits of the Tuskegee Airmen during World War II.

The reviews so far have been mixed to negative, which means it's probably one of Lucas' better efforts of the last two decades.

    That was good too.

Count on Mojo to turn a Red Tails newspost into a poetry reading.

While you're at it, have a haiku. :p

    Red tails soar and crash
    Everyone keeps making rhymes
    Angry Lucas cries

Here's my attempt at a poem:

We yearn for those long-lost days of yore
Before following Lucasarts became such a chore
Before Star Wars games became such a bore
To us Lucasarts have shut that door

But we are the keepers of brave Mix’n’mojo
For it has become our spiritual dojo
A refuge from the woe we feel in our hearts
For those lost IPs of which Lucas cares not a fart

So sing with me brothers, sing with me friends
The passion we feel for those games never shall end
And should Lucas never revisit them again
Our hatred for Lucas, our love for them shall transcend!

(can't wait for The Walking Dead!)

I was excited for The Walking Dead until I played Jurrassic Park. I fear this may be TTs new way of doing "action/adventure" to keep the audience wide. And if it is, then god help us all, its Lucas Arts all over again.

Over at the Telltale Games forums, they're having the same worries. Jake explained the gameplay as: It's not going to be a Sam & Max type game in terms of "everything is an oddball labyrinth of puzzles which only make sense when you've competed them," but it puts more environmental exploration and piecing things together in the hands of the player than BTTF or JP. There's also a bit more role playing put into the player's hands in WD.

So it sounds like it should be a more hands on experience than Back to the Future or Jurassic Park, which makes me excited for the game again. :)

. But maybe there could be more Passion

    ...but maybe recover some passion

Sounds like the passion needs more... polish?

You know what though? As far as their fan base goes outside of Star Wars I don't know how passionate anyone can be for LEC anymore. The passion is not reciprocated, or at least that's how I feel anyway.
Sure we had that little purple patch a while back with the Steam releases and the Monkey Island SE's, but outside of that most of the news about LEC games that is newsworthy is generated by people that are reworking LECs classic titles, through scummVM, Residual, Grim Deluxe, etc (not saying that isn't newsworthy - it totally is! I love the work happening there! Again though, its rehashing a period of greatness that LEC themselves either can't or won't)
With Darrell Rodriguez at the helm it felt like things were improving, now its back to the boring licencing Star Wars only days once more.
    Buzz kill huh?

On the other hand, as mentioned, there should be some excitement around the activity of Double Fine and Telltale (can't wait for The Walking Dead!), not to mention Autumn Moon (please Bill, keep going!). These guys are putting out some great content!

    One more thing...

Hmm. I don't know. I like the sarcastic tone of the news here. I don't think it means we don't care. But maybe there could be more Passion, I don't know.

I'm ok with LEC and George Lucas criticism, they certainly deserve most of it. But what's up with the self-deprecating tone this website has adopted? I know it's meant as a joke, but every single post seems to say "I don't care about this" or "I'm over this". It has been a slow year for LEC news, but Telltale and Double Fine had very busy years, however news posts are always mocking or, worst, press release-like.
Other gaming sites (Rock, Paper and Shotgun and Kotaku) recently posted about the Grim Fandango fan remake you guys also covered. It was covered with some depth and it spawned a lot of interesting discussion, I think there is still interesting for LucasArts games out there.
I don't want you guys to take yourself seriously, not at all, I really enjoy your humor, but maybe recover some passion

The problem with LucasArts now a days, is that all they are is a vault of good IPs, with no good people to handle them. Back in the day, they had all these talented people, they were the ones that made these amazing games we all love. But then Lucas couldn't keep the, around, or didn't want to, so those people left, while Lucas retained the copyright.

MM, DOTT, S&M HTR, FoA, FT, none of those brilliant people are at Lucas anymore, so now, none of those great ideas can go anywhere. They just sit and rot until Lucas sells em to TellTale or someone else inexperienced, and also holding none of the original brilliance.

Yeah, I agree. I just love the poetic nature of what I mentioned in passing before, that George is the creator and destroyer at the same time, loved and feared. He's the rebel that went his own way, and created some truly iconic IP out of love for his work and at the same time he is the uncaring capitalist who sees everything in terms of profit and seems to not care about much else.

These (basically two) huge IP that LucasArts has is perhaps a burden of some sort for the company, they earn too much by just owning them to be forced to actually do something, and there too big too let someone be creative with them. (There has been millions of SW games, but only like a handful have been fun. KOTOR+2 Jedi Knigt+Academy, and maybe the LEGO games (never played them, but Mojo give them good reviews if I recall correctly)) Smaller original IP, like the ones this site cares about, where creativity has been pretty unlimited are almost all noteworthy and incredibly fun!
Just want to add that I think TellTale did a very good job with Tales, very solid game trough and trough (apart from that fish people part I guess) and some very brave changes to the characters which I was much needed. But yeah, I get the "inexperienced" point about their other games. At least they are trying though.

I don't think I hate them so much as think they've become irrelevant. Knowing them, though, they could change my opinion any second. E3 is around the corner and Clint Hocking must be working on *something*, right?/quote]

I love how this is actually a "Fanpage" of LEC and Lucas.

The International House of Mojo really dislikes Lucas and LEC, but then I guess all of their fans really dislikes them at this point. In some odd way, I get the impression that the feelings are mutual on the other side. Much love, and much hate. I which I where more fluent in English so I'd write a poem about it.
