I'm pretty sure the PS2 was the weakest of that gen hardware wise, between it and Xbox and GC.
I believe that's true, but the prevailing issue was no doubt that the game was built from the ground up for Xbox architecture, and it's difficult to transpose to such a different SKU in six months. Budcat had their work cut out for them.
I played it on PS2 and PC. MY memory of it on PS2, is not as negative as everyone else.
That doesn't mean everything everyone said about it wasn't true. It's an inferior version.
BUT! The game is so good, it still comes across in my opinion. I remember still laughing and having fun, playing it on PS2, even though I was missing some particle effects and textures.
That said for the "PS4" release it would have been nice for them to release a version with at least the PC graphics.

I played a little bit of the PS2 version when the game came out, and I couldn't get over how bad it was. I get that it was probably a difficult game to port, but it bother me to imagine that for some people, that's what Psychonauts is.
That sums it up nicely to me.
I was hoping the computer version would have been ported, but ah well… If you've played the original you'll enjoy this. That's not necessarily a positive testimony, though.
As I recall, a lot of basic effects couldn't be carried over, like the water rippling in the lake. And when Sasha emerges to lecture you in his level, you can see the outline of the "space" he's opening.
The game is cheap on Steam. Buy a gamepad and play that version.
