Psychonauts a "Playstation 2 Classic" as of August 28th 05 Sep, 2012 / 4 comments

Which means that you can now purchase and download it as a PSN title. The PS2 version of Psychonauts is not the one I'd recommend to anyone with the option (which ought to be pretty much everyone, what with it on Steam), but it's always lovely to see the game get a little boost in availability and distinction. Quoth Chris Remo:

To truly become a PlayStation 2 Classic, we wanted to ensure Psychonauts had all the time it needed to grow into its status as a classic, like a fine artisanal Tuscan cheese. But less smelly.

Please accept a similar rationale for the timing of this news post.

I believe the Xbox version is also available over XBLA.

    It is indeed.

It's just heavily scaled down in general, with extreme aliasing, shorter draw distance for stuff like figments, obscene loading times, fairly prevalent bugs, etc. Particularly, a lot of the more sophisticated effects are compromised which blunts a bit of the visual awesomeness of levels like Blackvelvetopia and kind of ruins an innumerable number of small effects (like Agent Nein emerging from a now not-so-invisible-but-instead-clearly-outlined trapdoor in his mind).

It's not unplayable by any means, but should absolutely be considered a last resort and with the game available on Steam and the existence of USB gamepads, the PS2 version is pretty useless to anyone who doesn't have the modest PC it would take to play a much more favorable version of the game. I believe the Xbox version is also available over XBLA.

I actually don't play a lot of games on PC anymore, but I do on PS3. Why wouldn't you recommend the PS2 version? Why is the PC version superior? Is it worth buying on PSN?

I haven't actually played the PS2 version, so I can't speak to the overall quality of it, but I know it looked a lot worse than the other versions.
