Stealing yet another of Monkey Island's ideas, the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film has been confirmed to embrace the latest craze and will be presented in Disney Digital 3D. As the film isn't yet shooting, hopefully this means it will be the good kind of 3D designed "from the ground up" as opposed to the retroactively converted 3D such features as Clash of the Titans and Alice and Wonderland suffered exhibited.

The only film I've seen in 3D that really made a difference to the experience was Coraline. It was like the whole thing became a stage-show with real puppets being performed in front of me! I'm just sad I can't get that experience from the DVD.

But have you seen Avatar?? I haven't. ;
I'm told it changes opinions about 3D as an enhancer rather than a gimmick, though. I'm yet to be won over.
I did see Avatar, right at the end of its theatrical run. I didn't really like the film, but from a purely 'was the 3D awesome?' perspective I'd say... not really. I mean, yes, it worked very well, and the technology is clearly 'there', but they still shoot these 3D films like 2D movies. The camera needs to be more static, because it really is like looking through a window - and when things appear from the left side, or the right side, or the top of the frame or the bottom, it just 'pops' into existence in a really suspension-of-disbelief breaking way.
That's my opinion at least!
There is a definite sweet spot with 3D. The 3D elements to the side are slightly bent as they are meant to be seen in your peripheral vision, which looks a bit jarring when sitting a bit far from the screen. If you're not sitting very close to the screen, I'm talking closer than you'd like to sit at a 2D screening, then you're not getting the full effect. It works best when it fills out your vision as much as possible, sitting in the back or even the middle can break the whole thing, it makes quite a big difference.
That's why a real IMAX theater cannot be beat as they have humongous screens.

The one movie that I really enjoyed watching in 3D was Coraline. In Avatar, frankly, the 3D effects didn't add anything great to the experience.

Bah, 3D. I'm not a big advocate of the technology, to be honest - it still feels like a gimmick.
Tron Legacy will be the game-changer, if they pull it off. So freaking psychedelic...
