New Sam & Max Screenshots Released, Lamenting Continues 21 Mar, 2004 / Comments: 45

Somehow, this German Adventure Website got their hands on quite a few screenshots from the devastatingly cancelled Sam and Max Freelance Police. Some of the screenshots are new. Some we've seen before, only here, they're in much higher quality and not scanned from a magazine.

Weep openly.

Ya know, if everyone that signed that petition pledged $5 or $10, we could pay the development costs for LucasArts till the game is finished and ready to ship. Damn the bastards
  • RumRogerz on 25 Mar, 2004, 04:24…
Hey, I'd pay 5 bux for the cause. For a lifetime of laughter? Hells yea
  • KrK on 25 Mar, 2004, 12:20…
Id happily pay well over that if they just released the game. Anyone else reckon its worth a campaign?
  • PirateKingChris on 23 Mar, 2004, 22:12…
My shirt is now soaked with a lovely mix of drool, then tears, and finally vomit. Shame on you LucasArts. Shame...on...you.
  • Guyfrench Threepwood on 23 Mar, 2004, 21:12…
Guys : be sure you never run out of Scummvm... because this is the only way to hear again from the voice of Max "How violent, but very true to life"

    *sigh and cries endlessly*
  • GregD on 23 Mar, 2004, 13:12…
Dammit some of those new shots look excellent. What on earth possessed LEC Marketing to cancel this, it would have been stunning.

I say we all go on a witch hunt for LEC Marketing and management, dammed fools!
  • ThunderPeel2001 on 22 Mar, 2004, 14:31…
    Beautiful screenshots/I hate LucasArts

To think that this will probably be the last ever Adventure news article on this site....
  • Blaze^ on 22 Mar, 2004, 07:38…
Am I the only one still hoping that this is still an elaborate (and early) mixnmojo april fools gag that went so far that even LA thought they had cancelled SnM2?
  • PirateKingChris on 23 Mar, 2004, 22:18…
If only it could be true. About 1% of my being is waiting for April 1st to come and go to be sure. But then there's that other 99% of me that's SANE! Dash it all!
  • webnexus on 22 Mar, 2004, 10:27…
That was my first thought, too. At least it's already a good PR for both, Mixnmojo and LucasArts (if they'll release it after all). And it just takes a few seconds to find a handful of shops which still take preorders for the release date in May.
But ... nooooo, that's just too vague ... or isn't it ... or ... ahhhhhhh!

I'm just pissed off that that beautiful engine developed for Sam & Max 2, (that could have made making further 3D point-and-click adventures for LucasArts and been licensed to 3rd paties), won't see the light of day in any form in all likelihood.

Sure Sam & Max cost $400,000 in development or whatever, and may not have recouped on game sales, but it would have paid for itself when the engine was used for the much cheaper development of MI5, DOTT2, Loom2, Jar-Jar's Big Adventure, the new Full Throttle sequel, a new Indy Jones point-and-clicker and any number of original titles.

  • telarium on 22 Mar, 2004, 23:34…
$400,000? Think higher. Maybe much higher.
  • SiN on 23 Mar, 2004, 23:03…
yeah, a standard FPS costs around $8 million to make nowadays ... an adventure game (im guessing) would cost around $12-$15 million.

heres the thing. theres NO way u can justify the release of s&m2 by saying "they could have made a profit" ... thats virtually impossible. however, i always thought that the MASSIVE profits LEC made of the star wars games, would help pay off the losses with their adventure games

not so this time i guess. :(

  • jp-30 on 23 Mar, 2004, 15:31…
Well, whatever the development costs - these would have been recouped upon further use of the engine for subsequent 3D point & click adventures, even if Sam & Max itself didn't break even.
  • SiN on 26 Mar, 2004, 18:35…
what u dont understand, is that they wouldnt have. im thinking very realistically here ... theres no way LEC can make too much profit off adventure games anymore. unfortuately, the mainstream market doesnt go for it, and with the rise in development costs, it wouldnt have worked out.

think about it like this. u say they could've used this engine for future adventure games ... but what about making profits off those games? they wont sell any better than s&m2 would, so yeah, they wouldnt have to develop a new engine, but they'd STILL lose money because of a lack of sales.

i always thought that the massive amount of $$$ that LEC make off their star wars games wouldve covered the losses that s&m2 made.

apparently, it doesnt. too bad, huh? now they've lost their most important fans.

  • spaff on 24 Mar, 2004, 14:23…
they pissed all their money on a load of really pretty poor games... Wrath... RTX... Gladius... lost out on armed and dangerous because they pushed it out too soon... and they havent got any money left.

why the fuck did they spend all their money on these games? I dunno, i imagine they thought they were creating original IP. But their fans were sitting there waiting for them to do soemthing really good again... alas.
  • jp-30 on 24 Mar, 2004, 15:25…
I always assumed Wrath was just a P&D deal, tied up with signing The Collective to make Indiana Jones & The Emperor's Tomb.

  • TyraaRane on 21 Mar, 2004, 22:29…
    ...Woe.

    *weeps*
  • RumRogerz on 21 Mar, 2004, 18:58…
on a lighter note, www.amberfisharts.com has uploaded a cool engine demo of FOAII. This should lighten some spirits up a bit. The project is comming along very nicely i must admit.
  • TheBLueFlamingo on 21 Mar, 2004, 18:13…
damn them. they even got the little rats in there!
  • LucasTones on 21 Mar, 2004, 16:46…
Haha! You stupid fanboys, I'm glad Sam and Max 2 was cancelled. These screenshots were released just to make you cry! HAHA! I win. Star Wars Rules.

    ...is what LucasArts say.
  • Treintje on 21 Mar, 2004, 16:39…
I really want to check that answering machine and to meet that guy in purple. Please tell me I'm still in this cancelation nightmare and when I wake up I can play Sam and Max 2.

  • Udvarnoky on 21 Mar, 2004, 15:35…
People really deserve to die for this. Those who canceled Sam and Max 2 have lost sanctifying grace.
  • Gabez on 21 Mar, 2004, 16:32…
And what makes me even more annoyed is that we're going "wow" over these screenshots, but I bet that they're nothing to what the full game would have been like. WHY. WHY!>?!>!>!>.1...,skddfgf
  • Udvarnoky on 21 Mar, 2004, 16:52…
Yeah, this probably just scratching the surface. Thinking about how great actually playing the game would have been makes me want to kill people...more than usual, anyway.

  • Gabez on 21 Mar, 2004, 14:03…
Dude, the brokenness of Mojo reflects my broken heart. :(

Plus we need an edit button.

I'm really impressed with the Sam model on those wider shots. Imagine how cool it would all look with full screen anti-alias turned on.

    Damn them all.
  • telarium on 21 Mar, 2004, 14:26…
As a side note, I was just going back to look at the Full Throttle 2 screenshots... they just don't even compare in terms of quality.

    DAMN THEM ALL... again.
