New Lair of the Leviathan screenshots and video 26 Sep, 2009, 01:00 / 23 comments

To whet your appetite for this coming Tuesday's release of Chapter 3 of Tales of Monkey Island, Telltale have posted a few more screenshots of Lair of the Leviathan on their trusty blog. Beware some spoilers within, however!

Telltale have also released a Lair of the Leviathan gameplay video, currently exclusive to IGN, which is equally spoilery.

I echo everyone's sentiments about the character models needing a bit more variety but to be fair I don't really care. I'm too excited that we're gearing up for Chapter 3 already. I'm such a sad act, I've booked Wednesday off work just for it. Could've spent the day with an actual female and yet I've snubbed it in favour of playing TMI.

I thought de Cava looked like the Guybrush model

i know... just today i was noticing it while playing, i was all like "hey, Lucy West is exactly the same as Sentinel Lyons... and Moira looks just like amata and..."
...wait a sec, that was fallout 3, nm.

Come to think of it, isn't Morgan an Elaine model?
  • Jake on 26 Sep, 2009, 20:17…
I'm pretty sure Guybrush is LeChuck too. (Elaine and Morgan are their own models.)

Fortunately I take so much LSD every day that all the characters in every game, film and television show look completely identical anyway.

So I think it's a bold statement from Telltale: Everything is one.

    Ho ho!

    Am I me?

Who knows? Post a picture of your 3D model.

Good to know that our maniacal friend is back. Oops, spoiler warning.
  • Giygas on 26 Sep, 2009, 01:57…
Ugh. It looks like De Cava also re-uses the skinny model.

I won't discuss it too much, because impressions should still be under embargo, but I'm playing the review code right now.
I must say that the infamouse recycling is still there, but they did a much better job to disguise the usual base-models this time around.

I guess this issue is tightly related to Tales being the first "continuous" Telltale series. Half of each episode of Sam & Max, Strong Bad and Wallace & Gromit featured recurring rooms and characters. Tales always offers new environments and characters, and I guess the Telltale production model is suffering from this take.

    Ditto. Just that.

Oh for... he's a major character introduced in the first episode, and they didn't have time to make a unique model for him?! This is starting to tick me off.
  • Jeo on 26 Sep, 2009, 10:00…
That was clearly planned from the beginning. He looked just like that in all the pictures we saw of him so I really don't know how they could have given him a different model.

Not that I really support this recycling. maybe it's necessary but to me it's the one "big" problem with this series.
  • Ascovel on 26 Sep, 2009, 18:21…
I somehow don't mind the character recycling almost at all. The only time it was getting irritating was on Flotsam.
  • Jeo on 27 Sep, 2009, 09:00…
Yeah, the models are much better disguised in the second episode but it kind of hurts the immersion to always notice these things.

  • The Tingler on 27 Sep, 2009, 09:48…
I can confirm that while those skinny and thin pirate models do return in Episode 3, they are even better disguised - you have to be looking out for them to notice them.

It's as if all my dreams have come true...
I wish Telltale could go back to episode 1 and tweak those models a little bit more and all would be fine. A special edition dvd would be awesome but I'm not holding my breath.
  • The Tingler on 26 Sep, 2009, 16:07…
Actually, I apologise Telltale. Now I've actually looked properly De Cava only very, very generally appears to be the skinny pirate. He does appear to be a proper new model.
  • Izzy on 26 Sep, 2009, 16:50…
Its weird that they only have to charcter models though. One fat and short model and a skinny and tall model
  • Ascovel on 26 Sep, 2009, 18:19…
There are three models. The third is rather tall, but doesn't have a much more round face than the skinny, tall type.
  • Ascovel on 26 Sep, 2009, 21:25…
should be "does" and not "doesn't"
  • Jeo on 26 Sep, 2009, 16:48…
Actually... I didn't even look at those screenshots before I commented for the fear of spoilers. I was certain from the beginning that De Cava was going to be based on the skinny model... but now I actually had to check that picture and yeah... it's definately a new model.
