MI5 Continued 31 Mar, 2002, 13:25 / 52 comments

We're back with another MP3 from what indeed seems to be a new Monkey Island game! The anonymous person sent us this file (click here to download it), which is supposed to be from a cutscene that will be shown at this year's E3. The scene features (from what we can tell) new music and a character that hasn't been seen since MI2. Some people continue to question whether or not Dominic Armato is voicing Guybrush in these, but it appears to us that it is in fact Dom.

I've been told that we should recieve a few more samples in the coming days. Keep checking back, as we'll post the files as soon as we get them. This looks to be the real thing mates! Stay tuned!

Greeting Mixnmojo.com, I am Nemisis from the future! MI5 isn't real! You must track down the basterds who are setting you up and kill them! I was a victom of there evil plot!

This is most likely an April fool... just done a few days early to confuse us all. Its a good April fool however. Congrats guys...

  • Kingzjester on 01 Apr, 2002, 09:13…
Am I the only one who finds these discussion threads ever so hilarious? There is some guy (Spaff, Dom, all of Mojo crew who claim Dom is "not home" *wink* *wink* and tend to support the "this is for, like, real" stories) laughing heartedly.

    *Guffaw*

If this REALLY is, like, for real, I never said this. :})

Ok, im now officially very excited.
  • The_last_great_adventurer on 01 Apr, 2002, 08:51…
Acualy the reason I think its real is that the quality is very very high. The pause in music btween Guybrush saying "...don't you mean Bra whereing pirate?" and Largo's response is case in point. Also when would SPAFF and DOM get to gether to plan something this elaberate? Music DOES get recycled and Cannon ball battles don't sound to differnet from each other, so I say its a 50/50 chance of being real or fake...
  • deadworm222 on 01 Apr, 2002, 08:55…
Especially when ALL files were released before the first of April, chances are 60 real 40 fake...

Or then they wanted to make the joke more believable.
  • Big_Whoop on 01 Apr, 2002, 08:26…
Shouldn't Largo have a different dialect, than the australian type he has in the clip (at least I thought it sounded australian), didn't LaGrande, mean that he was from a spanish family?
strange if they indeed make a game with more major errors than EMI had.
After listening to this clip, I somewhat belive this less, than I did when I heard the first one.
  • Scummbuddy on 01 Apr, 2002, 07:35…
Mixnmojo has really outdone itself this time. The clip sounds so real, but given the timing of releasing the news im going to have to say a big No. And to Dominic, shame on you(hehe). but the sound files are amazing. i wish it were true.
  • fionabunny on 01 Apr, 2002, 07:18…
    IT'S REAL IT MUST BEEE!!!
What do you mean you're indifferent? Who cares? It's monkey island, of course we must have MORE. Lucasarts overdid starwars but nobody's complaining.
  • Dalixam on 01 Apr, 2002, 07:49…
EVERYBODY's complaining about the abundance of Star Wars games.
  • Huz on 01 Apr, 2002, 10:55…
    Testify!
  • zeebee on 01 Apr, 2002, 06:22…
why can this secret guy get mp3files but none pictures? it's more work to extract the audio and compress it to mp3 than simply make an screenshot!
  • Sumez on 01 Apr, 2002, 06:15…
Why do people even question wether this is real? It's an obvious Aprils fools.

People will believe anything, some even believed the Monkey Island Pok?mon card game expansion!

  • deadworm222 on 01 Apr, 2002, 08:51…
Well, it's still April the first :D
  • guybrushthedwarf on 01 Apr, 2002, 05:36…
anyone has ever read T Pratchett ?because what is said in this sound file tells us that the story could be : there's a voodoo problem everybody dies but the dead comes to life againand this will explain the" only undead pirat" and the Largo return. It's there that Pratchett come in the discussion for he's written a book in which the dead didn't really die because of the Dead Hollyday and it really funny... and it will b be great in the MI universe. yiah!
  • Cursed Tuna on 01 Apr, 2002, 05:17…
    No, it can't be true...
If you can remember, last year at E3 Sean&Mike said that MI5 would have been a prequel... Now, if there are 4 secrets, if Guybrush already knows Largo... Anyway, I don't want another MI... I'd like more a completely new game, like GF... Or maybe a sequel to ZakMcKraken...

--Sorry for my terrible english, I'm not a rough and ignorant peasant, I'm just italian... ehehe...--
  • Scurvyliver on 31 Mar, 2002, 23:48…
Man, Im loving these sound clips!

Here though is the two possible senarios.

    1) Indeed a monkey Island 5 is in late production. From what we learnt in EMI, the voices were recorded early 2000, so if this is for real expect the game later this year!

This means the informer is obviously a LEC leak. The game industry prides itself on creating rumours - the best form of advertising and creating hype amongst fans. Where else to do it but on a LEC supported website.

    2) A Hoax. To me this is much too sophisticated for the mojo crew (no offense), though Largo does sound a bit like dom). The first time i heard the first guybrush clip i thought maybe it wasnt from MI5, but another game where he was doing a cameo appearance (remember the poll over at lucasarts).

What ever the reason, this is great! That latest clip made me like it better then EMI itself! Pirates, battles, cool music - bring it on!

You're saying it's impossible for it to be an outtake from a previous MI game? Off with your head.
  • QueZTone on 31 Mar, 2002, 22:59…
hahaha i love this guys :) Great thing, i dont mind if its a april joke. I love having a voice in my head for Largo now :D Sounds great although it's just Dom with an alteration in his voice. After all that's what he's good at :) Great stuff Dom, Mojo!
  • iisaac on 31 Mar, 2002, 22:43…
The stereo sound proves it was recorded and mixed in a studio.
  • Pedgey on 01 Apr, 2002, 05:39…
no it doesnt, i can do stereo recording on my pc or on a cheap tape recorder ive got kicking around here...

  • iisaac on 31 Mar, 2002, 22:57…
It could be outtakes from MI4.
  • McScurvy on 31 Mar, 2002, 18:03…
Nice one although it's easy to tell this is an April Fools joke for the simple reason that Spaff is the one posting it. I mean when is the last time he put up a news item, March 24? Besides that, Largo sounds horrible and given LEC's V.A. track record they wouldn't cast a voice that bad. Although it would fit Largo if he gets kicked in the groin by a metal boot early on.

On the other hand however, Guybrush does sound like Dom, and if it is him then the joke has to be from LEC. Otherwise, if the jokes from Mojo, Dom could get the beard sued off him by Lucas?s Storm Troo?er?Lawyers for unofficially using the characters voice and name.

But enough about that, who?s up for some Death Sports!
  • MonkeyMug on 31 Mar, 2002, 18:29…
I doubt they would sue Dom, they can over react, but thats alittle extreme. But the word "sue" does bring something to mind... *hides the stuff she "borrowed" from LEC* There... On... To... Me... Eep...
  • Jake on 31 Mar, 2002, 18:02…
Remember, before you go crying "fake," both the original CMI trailer AVI from LEC, and EMI itself used repeat and placeholder sounds. Sarah and I aren't sure what this is all about.
  • chuzwuzza on 31 Mar, 2002, 17:57…
Largo sounds like a high-pitched version of Dom's voice...
  • Remi O on 31 Mar, 2002, 18:03…
I second that. Great work with music and sound fx tho.
  • raVen_image on 31 Mar, 2002, 18:01…
Really? I thought it sounded more like the voice that performed Wally in CMI.

But sound effects? and music?...a recorded cutscene? That kind of remixing is done at the END of production.

It's all too complete to be real.
  • Jake on 31 Mar, 2002, 18:04…
We know from interviews with Dominic Armato and the various Monkey Island game designers that the cutscene audio is done before anything else.
  • Serge on 31 Mar, 2002, 18:13…
Yeah. Mainly due to the fact that to do proper lip-syncing and expressions in pre-rendered/drawn video sequences you need the actual voice. You can't tell phrasing, timing of words, and mood from a script. Been through that discussion once before, and tired of it now, so I won't be defending this if anyone argues with it ;)

But wow, I'm really enjoying this stuff, hoax or not :)
  • Barber Dominique on 31 Mar, 2002, 17:46…
yepp, i agree with you in that!!..
really good work with the second "sound rumour", specially the background Largo LeGrande Music...!
  • Remi O on 31 Mar, 2002, 17:26…
Heh heh... Aw, come on... At least they're playing the joke out to the bone. Even though TSB pulled something like this a few years back, it was never quite this sophisticated. :)
  • Barber Dominique on 31 Mar, 2002, 16:07…
hey...you know...i got excited with all these...but im going down, as i hear more "sound rumours"...
We can all hear that background sounds from the beggining of CMI...but on the other hand...i dont think Dom would do this to us!!..I think LEC would just kill him, if they notice this...
But...think about it...If this guy has this sounds...he's got to be working in LEC, and i dont think anybody from there would send us information like this...not until press release...I hate this Aprils fools...you crossed the line this time guys!
  • Barber Dominique on 31 Mar, 2002, 16:07…

It is (can be) just an elaborate prank, not by Mojo or even Dom, but by Lucas peeps... And then on E3 in May they give us a whole new game...

Quite frankly, I'm indifferent towards MI5... MI is not what it used to be, and computer games in general have become little less than franchises; companies leasing their trademarks to other companies to make them into games, and the quality seldom matters... Lucas Arts itself is not making all the stuff, but it started buying engines freom third parties and messing with them a little bit... I feel cheated out of somehting... a revolutionary company has become presque mediocre...

Thank you for reading this far into this harangue...

Time to make another monkey island site...
  • Metallus on 31 Mar, 2002, 15:05…
Largo! Holy Crap! I totally forgot about that guy.
  • Radogol on 31 Mar, 2002, 14:56…
I love Mojo dearly. It's well written, superbly mixed and fine acted - for April Fools joke that is. I'm looking forward to see playable demo as a next year joke. And maybe an animated movie (at leat a trailer) in two years time.
You're just getting better and better !
  • MonkeyMug on 31 Mar, 2002, 15:21…
*nods* Yes, now I will not, nay, I refuse to believe this is real untill I see a press release from LEC, but... The Largo LaGrande thing is !@#$ *doesn't know if she should be swearing or not* cool. You evil geniuses... :D
  • maclaine on 31 Mar, 2002, 15:12…
In three years then we could expect a full April Fools MI game?
  • MonkeyMug on 31 Mar, 2002, 14:23…
I don't care if it's fake or not, this gave me the MI fix I needed, right Guybrush the Bunny? GB: *sniff**sniff*
Blaze: YEAH! WHEREEVER YOU GO ON SEA OR ON LAND, YOU CAN'T EVER HIDE FROM LARGO LeGRAND!
  • Dalixam on 31 Mar, 2002, 14:19…
It is him and Mojo could easily convince him to play along on an April fools joke.
  • tabacco on 31 Mar, 2002, 14:01…
That has to be Dom... it just sounds way too much like him to be faked. Maybe he's having us all on with an early April Fools' joke :)
  • bgbennyboy on 31 Mar, 2002, 13:57…
Im convinced its a fake now:
The cannon noises, booms and chattering in the background is from the attacking the fort at the begining of CMI.
Its definately Dominic Armato doing the voice and its a really nice remix of the Largo theme - in the CMI style, but its a fake. Stop toying with my emotions mojo!
  • Sam & Monkey on 31 Mar, 2002, 14:30…
lec reuses tons of sounds in games. there was a lot of cmi sounds and music in emi locations. i mean if the sound is already made why waste time making it over? and if the game is in early production you never know if these are final cuts. it's definately dom and god knows who did that largo voice. i'm putting my $$$ on monkey 5 baby! i just hope it doesn't blow like emi
  • DJG on 31 Mar, 2002, 13:26…
heh. I love that Largo voice. It's all high pitched and munchkin-like.
