MI2 talkie? Finally! 02 Oct, 2008, 00:56 / 15 comments

Well, not an official release. But TheJoe is looking for voice-actor volunteers to add voice audio to Monkey Island 2 using a tool called 'ScummSpeaks'.

You can read more in the threads here at LucasForums or here at ScummVM's Forums. The latter one has input from the author of ScummSpeaks, jestar_jokin and you can see his short 'proof of concept' demonstration here;

There's an earlier speech-hack demo by jestar_jokin here.

Can I get a hosted site for this at all? Free? Pay? Whatever?

Considering that no-one ever reads comments after a while, you'll need to contact Gabez about that. (just click on his name)

    Righto. That's done.

Someone give Dominic Armato a call!

Hmm... Anyone know him personally? Nah my current Guybrush is great.

    Heeeey I'm famous!

This is only the proof of concept for working with vars. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNO7HpeWgtU This one, also by jestar, sees edited dialogue with speech. This was done with manual hex editing and he made ScummSpeaks to make it easier.

It's really interesting with respect to SCUMMv hacking skills! jestar_jokin might even be able to use any text2voice software and generate all word automatically, and link them to all dialog in the game.
However aesthetically it kind of sucks.... Voice acting only works when it's really welldone, otherwise it will only annoy people.

Hmm... sounds slightly robotic. I almost expect it to tell me what the time is at the tone.

Well, that is just a "proof-of-concept" test by the hack author. That's not what TheJoe's done.

Yeah I've done some much more uberishnessawesome than this simple demo.
  • jp-30 on 02 Oct, 2008, 20:29…
    Care to share?
  • TheJoe on 03 Oct, 2008, 06:02…
I would but for some reason no screen recorder will record my sound =(
  • jp-30 on 03 Oct, 2008, 19:39…
Can you just videotape your screen with a regular camera?
  • TheJoe on 04 Oct, 2008, 10:14…
Embarrassingly enough I don't have a video camera, or a camera that will record more than 5 seconds of footage. :$

What I'd really love to see is the talkie tests that LucasArts did in-house on MI2 - apparently when they were first developing the code for playing voice files they got some employees to record lines from one or two scenes of MI2 and put the voices into the game.

Maybe using non-actors in their tests was what made them decide that, unlike in Sierra's KQ5, they'd actually let you turn the voices *off*...
