Loom II: Tell(tale) on Earth 12 Aug, 2009, 14:29 / 29 comments

I don't know what the chances of this actually happening are, but Dave Grossman's interested in continuing the Loom series.

In a recent podcast interview with Total PC Gaming (which doesn't seem to be out yet), they asked Dave what Telltale might be up to next:
“The one I always think about these days is Loom actually, and how ahead of its time it was. I think the problem with it at the time was that it was only two and a half hours long and now I find myself deliberately trying to design games that are only two and a half hours long. So I think… well, why not do that?”
Why not indeed?

See, now this is what happens when you print someone's answer to a question without the context of the actual question. I love the speculation though!

It’s likely that if a Telltale version of Loom sees the light of day, the more adult tone of the original will ensure a less casual episodic series.

That's a weird thing to say, as Loom was easily the most casual of all the LEC adventures, and by intention.

Hmmm, I guess they're attempting to say that Telltale's audience are Casual Gamers, and Casual Gamers do not like serious games.

    Uhh...

If you repackaged Loom into a more traditional click-n'-go adventure game along with the spell interface, it'd do just as well as any revived Lucas IP.

I mean, the mythology of the in-game world is magnificent. It just got ditched in the mud of history once SCUMM found its stride and made Loom like simplistic in comparison, IMHO.

I'm happy with the remake or continuation of just about ANY LucasArts classic adventure, whether it's made by LEC themselves or another company such as Telltale.

Since Loom is fairly dead and apparantly had less sales than most of LucasArts' games, I'm pretty sure that if Telltale asked to continue or remake the game LucasArts would 'rent the rights' for a small price.

*goes off to buy talesofloom.net* :p

This really could be awesome. I doubt it would sell though, outside of the hardcore Telltale-crowd...
  • jp-30 on 13 Aug, 2009, 04:37…
What about the hard-core LucasArts crowd? And the hard core Adventure game crowd?
  • Icebox on 13 Aug, 2009, 04:56…
I Would Expect The Exact Opposite. It will probably sell at the very least decently. However, I by no means expect a good game. Telltale's Offerings have always been kind of meh.

I agree with JP here. I think Telltale is one of the few (one of the very, very few) that manages to create brilliant games. And quite a lot of them. I can't think of any adventure game company currently working on Telltale's level.
  • jp-30 on 13 Aug, 2009, 07:24…
    Really? Not in my experience.
  • Icebox on 12 Aug, 2009, 17:27…
    Please, No.

I second that. Is nothing sacred any more? As far as I'm concerned, the only company capable of seriously handling the LucasArts legacy well is Autumn Moon Entertainment, or LucasArts itself for that matter. Those cheap episodic rip offs are a bad joke.

Have you played A Vampyre Story? Have you played either season of Sam and Max? Every game Telltale has made since Sam and Max Season One has been better in every way than A Vampyre Story, so I really have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.

(PS: Almost all the people who worked at LucasArts during their "golden age" are no longer there, and several of them are, in fact, at Telltale. This includes Dave Grossman, one of the three main minds behind MI1 and 2)

The interesting thing about Loom is that it would have be mostly serious to stay in the spirit of the first game - the first serious adventure game series from Telltale.
  • jp-30 on 12 Aug, 2009, 19:15…
    CSI?
  • neon_git on 12 Aug, 2009, 19:37…
Hell, even Bone is pretty serious for the most part.
  • Ascovel on 13 Aug, 2009, 00:55…
It was sticking to the original tale from the graphic novel - that's something different than creating your own story.
  • Radogol on 13 Aug, 2009, 01:03…
    CSI?
  • Ascovel on 13 Aug, 2009, 05:20…
CSI is just CSI. Doesn't count.
  • jp-30 on 13 Aug, 2009, 07:23…
Ahh, so the first serious game series by Telltale, except for the other two that don't count. Gotcha!
  • Ascovel on 13 Aug, 2009, 07:35…
CSI is hardly a game series by Telltale. They did only one game with that license. A game which doesn't count anyway of course.

So anyway. I'm still waiting for Telltale's first serious game series.
  • Jennifer on 13 Aug, 2009, 10:58…
Telltale made two CSI games (3 Dimensions of Murder and Hard Evidence), and they have one more that is coming out soon (Deadly Intent).
  • Ascovel on 13 Aug, 2009, 11:31…
OK. I admit. I'm so not into the CSI games that I got it all confused.

At least Loom would be the first serious FANTASY adventure game series from Teltale.

Other than Bone. If someone finds it serious enough.

So LOOM is very much worth doing, and I'm waiting with anticipation for it to happen.
  • Udvarnoky on 14 Aug, 2009, 00:05…
You might consider giving Telltale's CSI games a shot someday.
  • syntheticgerbil on 12 Aug, 2009, 16:34…
3 weeks ago I asked him about his Eurogamer comments on the Facebook Monkey Island Adventures interview and he said he had no plans of doing this. Maybe the bug is planted in his mind?

He did say he could track down Brian Moriarty. I'm all for it, I love Loom.
  • Izzy on 12 Aug, 2009, 16:22…
GTFO outta here. No way this could be happening. ;)
  • down_home_kitty on 12 Aug, 2009, 15:55…
I've been joking since about, um, 1990 that the game I'd like to see more than anything would be a Loom sequel. I would probably have a heart attack if it ever happened.

Someone slap that first stupid commenter on their site, though.
  • Giygas on 12 Aug, 2009, 14:53…
    Why stop at slapping him?
