"Look for a new Bone videogame to be released in the spring," says Publishers Weekly 14 Mar, 2009, 22:19 / 7 comments

The guys at joystiq have noticed an intriguing bit of information in Publishers Weekly's writeup about this month's top ten best-selling comics, a list which includes Crown of Horns, the final of the colorized Bone books released by Scholastic. Here's the book's entry as it appears in the list.
6. Bone: Crown of Horns.
Jeff Smith.
Graphix/Scholastic, $9.99 ISBN 978-0-439-70632-2
Crown of Horns vol. 9 is the final volume of Jeff Smith’s acclaimed comic fantasy adventure saga. Originally self-published in black & white in 1991, Scholastic/Graphix began publishing the series in full-color in 2005 and it has gone on to sell more than 2 1/2 million copies of the new edition. The Scholastic/Grahix edition released a 100,000 initial printing of the concluding volume and the new edition has been translated and sold in more than 30 countries. Look for a new Bone videogame to be released in the spring.
Underlining by me. This should definitely be considered rumor material, and even assuming it's true a new Bone game doesn't necessarily have to be developed by Telltale, not to mention that if a Bone game is indeed slated for Spring (which we're in), it seems odd that there's been not a peep about it anywhere. Definitely an interesting rumor though, and we'll see what comes of it, if anything.

Sorry for the double post, but Jeff Smith just said it wasn't true. Look at the comments on his blog. Here's what he said:

You know, I don’t know what the video game thing is all about. There is no new Bone video game in the works. I think it may be refering to something Scholastic is planing for its website - - a little flash game, maybe, or it could just be an internet rumor that made it onto the list!

While not my favorite Telltale-license, I sure hope it's true. I wonder how it could be true, however. As far as I know (which, I admit, isn't very far) there are two teams at Telltale, and one of them is in the middle of Wallace & Gromit, and the other (I think...) is working on Sam & Max. Not to mention part of the employees working on the various ports to other systems. And even if there would be people left to work on Bone, would it really be released this spring, in the middle of Wallace & Gromit, out of the blue? I suspect they mean to say that the existing Bone-games will be ported to Wii or 360. Which would be cool, because at least that would mean that the chances of Telltale someday finishing the series are higher. So, yeah, my money is on either a different developer, or just a port to another system.

I would love this to be more Bone from Telltale. It's still my favourite Telltale license.

While it is a rumour, Jeff Smith has reprinted that list with that underlined sentence it on the homepage of boneville.com, lending it a little more authenticity.

Dan Connors has said recently (though I can't dig up a link, unfortunately) that Telltale have some unannounced projects in the works, wouldn't it be lovely if one of them was the 3rd Bone installment?

I don't believe production has started on Sam & Max season 3 yet and Strongbad's wrapped up, so all those non-Wallace & Gromit staffers must have been doing something lately...

As much as I want it to be Telltale - and that's a lot, even if a slight change in art direction is in order from the previous games - I doubt it. All evidence points to the license having expired. Sad, because I'm reading Bone now and it's beautiful. We'll see, especially because of the upcoming film. (And please, whoever is making this film: make it good, and make it animated. If you Howard the Duck-ify it I will be out for blood.)

I always wonder what people find so amazing about Howard The Duck. I actually didn't see much difference between the comics and the movie.

I wouldn't know. It's gotten a share of praise, unlike that pos of movie.
