LEC alumni at the Oscars 08 Mar, 2010 / Comments: 8

As reader BillieJoe86 informs us, Michael Giacchino picked up a golden statuette at last night's Academy Awards for his musical score for Disney/Pixar's Up. In addition to his movie and TV credits, Giacchino is an experienced game composer, having worked on such LucasArts titles as Secret Weapons Over Normandy, Mercenaries, and Thrillville.

Though I'm guessing he wasn't at the ceremony, also worth noting is the fact that Best Animated Feature Film nominee Coraline featured the storyboarding talents of Graham Annable, former LucasArts animator and Telltale Creative Director, not to mention the father of Dank/Dunk.

There was also Joe Letteri (who won an Oscar for visual effects of Avatar), he was one of the guys who made the ILM cut-scenes of The Dig.

And did Giacchino really worked on Thrillville?

Thrillville has a bunch of music from LucasArts' library playing throughout the theme parks you build, so odds are some Giacchino tracks are in there. There's music from some of the old adventure games in there as well, for instance.

I must play Thrillville. It actually does interest me.

    Coraline didn't win!? :(

Thanks for the info on the people who worked on it. I didn't know.

Up won, and to be fair that was a hell of a great movie. There was some pretty stiff competition in this category.

However, I am furious that Studio Ghibli's Ponyo wasn't even nominated.

True. I liked Ponyo even more than Up. It's just plain wrong that it wasn't nominated.

I still have to catch up on UP and Ponyo.

I actually went to that movie without any preconceived information, just that it was a studio ghibli film, but I was sad to leave the theater unsatisfied, it was short and I guess was target for younger audience? Anyway, I'm really happy that UP won with Michael Giacchino as well.
