Jurassic Park delayed to this fall, Telltale starts throwing money at us 26 Apr, 2011 / 27 comments

File this one under "smart decision."

Telltale has just announced Jurassic Park: The Game will be held back until next fall to "ensure PC players get the best possible gaming experience." In other words, the game will be released for all platforms simultaneously this fall.

Apparently Telltale will also issue a 100% refund to those of us who pre-ordered, as well as bribing us with one free game to keep us quiet. Sounds like a fair deal. Though it's not stated if you'll get the refund and still get the game, I'm going to guess that would be one step too far. (Update: You do get your money back and the game. Good job, TTG. -- Never mind. ¬)

Hey, a delayed game is better than a game lacking polish.

That sounds good! I'm looking forward to seeing what's gonna happen to this game with 6 extra months in development.

One game doesn't mean the whole season. As I understood it, you have to purchase JP again in the fall, but you at least get a full refund and one free game (episode).

Please tell me where you pick up we get a full season.....

    Alan said it himself:

You'll be able to use your free game voucher on any full season game, including Jurassic Park when we make it available for purchase again. The voucher will not expire.

Good news for everyone who wanted to pick up Hector with this offer:

If you REALLY want Hector, you can use your voucher on the first episode and we'll add the other two episodes as they become available (contact support@telltalegames.com for that) or you can wait until the Hector bundle launches and just get all three then. The choice is yours.

They're actually going pretty far to keep the fans from burning down the TTG-building. I wonder if we'll ever get confirmation on the reasons behind the delay (although I assume most of the speculation is pretty close to the truth).

I apologize, but I must disagree to a certain extent. I don't walk around spreading rumours. ;)

If you want Jurassic Park for free, you can actually use said free game coupon to get it (in six months). The coupon is indeed valid for future TT games as well, be it Jurassic Park, Fables or King's Quest.

The FAQ on this matter should clarify things entirely.

You're absolutely right, my apologies! It's a bit of a weird business move for Telltale though - giving everyone who was interested in Jurassic Park in the first place the game for free. Oh well, I guess they know what they're doing. I'll probably use my free game-code on Walking Dead or Jurassic Park, whatever comes first.

I wonder if the free game will include Hector. I wasn't interested in it enough to pre-order it, but if it's for free...

Although it would be a waste of money... Hector is only 9.99 while JP (or other full seasons) is like, what, 29.99?

Eh, no. I guess people are talking about different things here, but before people start spreading crazy rumours: people who pre-ordered now get a refund, but they won't get Jurassic Park for free in the fall. If you want Jurassic Park, you'll have to order it again (and pay for it again) in 6 months. The free game Alan was referring to was the game you get to choose now, from the existing Telltale games.

I wish they'd done this on Back to the Future... Ah well, I guess they learned from that one... Too bad we had to sacrifice what could have been a brilliant game.

Alan Johnson posted this in the comments section of the Telltale blog:

"We're offering a free full season of any of our games to all those that pre-ordered. The voucher does not expire so you'll be able to use it on a future Telltale release if you so desire."

So essentially... since I pre-ordered Jurassic Park, I'll get it for free when it is released.

Telltale Games takes on an extra seven (?) licenses and delays the release of Jurassic Park. I can't see these two occurrences as being anything but linked.

Seeing JP was the next announced franchise with an actual release date, it would seem odd to me that they would push it back because they were putting its manpower on a game not yet firmly announced.

    Mixed feelings about this.

Great that telltale is taking it's time on improving games, on the other hand, is this really the case?

I mean, They have a bazillion licenses to work on atm, how do we know this isn't just moving the game back in the license roster?
Rather then putting more time and effort in producing it.

Call me pessimistic if you will, but I can't see it any other way.

Edit: I just read you can use the free game coupon on Jurassic Park, while still getting the refund.

Well that's a tad odd from a business standpoint, but Hey, Not going to complain about it.
    Thanks Telltale.

Glad they're willing to give the game the time it needs. I wonder why it took them up 'til the last possible minute to decide to delay the game several months, though?

All the Telltale games are 50% off right now, so by giving you a free game Telltale is in fact giving you only 50% of one game and not the full value - the cheap bastards! ;)

Yeah, that makes sense all round. Fall is a little bit extreme for a very last minute delay, but Jurassic Park seems to be getting more attention than even Back To The Future so it's a smart choice. I'm glad Telltale can make these hard choices when they need to.

I am sad though, I really was looking forward to playing it!

Here's the quote from Alan I was talking about. Someone asked:

So with the refunds, does that mean we get our money back AND still keep Jurassic Park the game? Surely not........

    And Alan replied:

    Good question. Here's the answer:

You get the free game of your choice and the refund. You'll be able to re-purchase Jurassic Park on the platform of your choice come this fall.

Damn... the only Telltale Game I didn't pre-order gets a freebie...

But apart from that: Ballsy move, and probably a good one. Still, I'm really wondering if they'll spend another 6 months on the game, or if they're just freeing up (wo)manpower for the other 20 or so licenses...

I was looking forward to this game, and I'm not very glad that they waited to announce (or make) this decision until the very last minute, but considering the fact that I'm going to get my money back and a better JP-game somewhere in the future (and 3000 other Telltale games before then) I guess I can't complain too much. Oh well.

I agree that it was a bit... late in the game... but yes, the fact that they made the right decision and are showering us with gifts more than makes up for it for me at least.

Unexpected, but I'm glad they're willing to brave some angry fans if it means creating a superior product. Half a year extra (in Telltale-time) is a long, long time. I guess those 'polish'-comments reached Telltale HQ.
