I've always wanted to be a Russian stacking doll 23 Nov, 2010 / 12 comments

Double Fine's new game has been announced. It is called Stacking, and, as far as I know, does not involve crates. Oh lordy.

The news comes exclusively from Mojo's sissy competitors IGN (or, as they would call Mojo, "worthy competition"), who have more details and a trailer.

The game is second in Double Fine's line-up of downloadable titles, and you should be excited for it if you: 1. don't exclusively play games on things that aren't PS3 or XBox 360, and 2. have access to PSN and XBLA. Otherwise you'll just have to hope to hype that it comes to other platforms, unlike a certain other game called Costume Quest (which Mixnmojo reviewed, by the way).

Expect the game in Spring 2011.

Also, as far as influences are concerned, this seems like the Russian answer to Grim Fandango.

Totally agree! I never thought I'd get so excited about a couple of matryoshka dolls jumping around. I really love Double Fine game design, always doing something different and looking for influences in the strangest places. Really inspiring.

Capn_NachoI know Scott C isn't art directing on any of this wave of Amnesia Fortnight games, and I don't think they'd do a Psychonauts game without him in charge of the art, so I doubt it, Tingler. :([/quote

Actually, Scott Campbell's DIRECTING one of them, I believe.

Ugh. Yet another Tim Schafer game that takes place in some crazy, fantastic world, filled with originality.

Why can't he ever make something normal and bland, like the rest of us?

I agree with Jason, this looks promising indeed!

No doubt the game will be great, but the power-stealing ability made me think immediately of the completely awful American McGee's Scrapland. That scared the shit out of me!

It actually reminds me of either Geist on the GameCube or Shiny's underrated Messiah on the PC. And FEAR3 looks like it'll do a similar thing to Geist, a ghost that can possess people.

    However, none had Russian dolls.

I'm prepared to bet that it will be. Tim has heavily hinted at it.

I do like the look of this game, but we haven't seen much of it. However, I play Double Fine games primarily for the characters, story and writing, so they'll have to do a lot of convincing to make me go for this. Especially not on PC. Costume Quest I will get eventually, but this... I don't know.

What has me so excited is the potential for brilliant *puzzles*. The idea can be bent around ala Braid to do some nifty things, though that's probably not the route they're going for. Still looks good! I really want to play this one, so, you know, PC etc. No PSN-approval here :(

I wonder who's directing this one?

I'm surprised this isn't generating more discussion. Also, as far as influences are concerned, this seems like the Russian answer to Grim Fandango. If Grim was the realization of Tim's need to see Day of the Dead paper mache skeletons brought to life, is Stacking indicative of a similar vision for matryoshkas?

    The Tingler

I'm still confident that one of the four games - most likely the final one - will be based in that universe.

This is all I have to say on the matter.

    Jones Jr

Does this mean The Tingler's other speculation in the latest MojoCast may also be true?!

Which one was that? About the Psychonauts-related one? I'm still confident that one of the four games - most likely the final one - will be based in that universe.
