Indiana Jones coming to Blu-ray this fall 03 Mar, 2012 / 13 comments

The long-awaited and long-rumored release of the Indiana Jones movies in high definition is officially coming this fall.

The package will contain all four films and what seems will largely be recycled extras. Here's Paramount's official blurb:

The man with the hat is back – and looking better than ever! The world’s favorite globe-trotting archaeologist is, at long last, embarking on his greatest adventure – when “The Complete Indiana Jones Blu-ray Collection” comes to Blu-ray Disc from Lucasfilm Ltd. and Paramount Home Media Distribution. The Complete Indiana Jones Blu-ray Collection will be excavated in the fall of 2012 and will include all four of Indy’s thrilling adventures, using the highest possible high definition picture and audio presentation – along with a “best of” collection of documentaries, interviews, featurettes and a few new surprises.

"A few new surprises" makes it sound as though the volume of extras not already released will be minimal, but from what has been reported about the Raiders restoration, which has been screened to a privileged few, the movies themselves are gonna look like a million bucks, and that's the main thing.

Update by ???: The big question is, will the CGI jeep from the recent HDTV broadcasts be included? Will we have another jeepgate?

And here is another article in which he tells about the new Raiders transfer and regretting the update on E.T.:

Spielberg on the upcoming Blu Ray release:

“This is the best I think it’s ever looked, because in preparation for the eventual release on Blu-Ray we had to correct the print again and get the original negative out of the salt mines, and then we had to do the separations, and basically the files, which are just amazing, with all the technology of today, without changing any of the movie materially, we haven’t removed anything, we haven’t added CGI, there’s no digital enhancements! It’s purely the movie you some of you may remember from 1981.”

It seems like it's a different transfer than the HD tv version. Plus he seems to have taken notice of the negative feedback on Lucas' Star Wars Blu Rays.

I honestly cannot tell the difference between the two jeeps.

E: Never mind, I was supposed to be looking at the rock face. How did someone even notice that?

Yeah, I think tweaking things like the jeep or other wide shots is a good thing. I'm ok with them tweaking video and effects, in fact, I would like to see improvements like those. Like thunderpeel said, as long as they don't nueter Indy like they did Han, it should be cool.

They better not superimpose a machine gun in the hands of the Cairo sword fighter or something.

Bah. Who cares about some slight tweaking to a jeep going off a cliff? If the change Indy's character (like they did with Han Solo) then YEAH, I understand the uproar. This is nothing.

    Bad Asp!

Yeah, they just wanted to include a film where a fridge gets nuked.

Unfortunately, that's not what happens in this movie. Instead of Indy and the fridge being reduced to ashes in some nanoseconds, some kind of weird pilot seat catapult thing happens. ;)

    Looking forward to this!

I'm wondering if the "few new surprises" refers to some of the scenes being redone a little? Maybe I'm crazy, but I thought the HD copies of these movies that have gone around on a few cable channels had a couple of scenes altered/changed to look better in wide shots, I could be mistaken though. Seems like there was a scene in Raiders with a jeep falling off a cliff that got pointed out as being different on the HD releases? Might be wrong.

Anyways, I'm excited, and I'm such an Indy nerd, I even like the fourth movie that everyone hates on so much. Yeah the fridge thing was pretty unbelievable, but so it skydiving out of a crashing airplane using an inflatable raft.

You know why he survived? Cause its fucking Indiana Jones, do you have any idea how many medals that man has earned?

    w00t for Indy!

If only they would release this as the trilogy instead of including that poser Indy movie, then I might consider buying this...as it is, I'll just be sticking with my DVDs for the time being.

So you won't buy it because it has the fourth movie in there? No one's forcing you to watch it ;)

Yup. We will assume that anyone who wants that fourth "movie" already has it on Blu Ray. So, why add insult to bad movie and put it into that box?

How else are they going to sell it?
