I'm starting to hate those guys 10 Oct, 2007 / Comments: 12

I know it's not strictly game related, but honestly, does anyone care when the subject is Indiana Jones? Well, it's sort of game-related, too.

You see, several different websites are reporting the confirmation that Steven Spielberg gave today that them pesky Russians will be replacing the Nazis in the upcoming Indy KOCS, aka Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Much like they did (as you remember, right?) in the very-good-well-I-liked-it-nuts-to-you-guys Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine. This news has been pretty much guessed before, but this is the first time it's actually been confirmed by The Directing Beard himself.

Spielberg also suggests that The Producing Beard (for his own anonymity we'll refer to him as GL, and that's Mr. Star Wars and not Green Lantern) is once again causing trouble by trying to get Spielberg to start using digital cameras rather than film-based ones. Spielberg is holding out so far against his nagging spouse. Spielberg says that if it worked for directors before him, then it's good enough for Indy IV.

In other more exciting news, the Futurama movie trailer is now up on YouTube and is hilarious. What's that got to do with us? Well, um... Frank Welker does the voice of Nibbler and he played Megatron in the game version of Transformers which was made by Traveller's Tales who made Lego Star Wars. And he played some characters in Knights of the Old Republic 2. Look for god's sake, it's new Futurama, do I need a reason to be excited and start abusing my power here? Gimme a break guys!

Update: apparently those jerks in Fox can't take a joke, so the trailer's been pulled. Those jerks. Hey... is that a Fox Lawyer coming towards me rig-
Update2: Just managed to get away and find another YouTube link. Enjoy again!

By the way, 20th Century Fox totally made them take down any Bender's Big Score trailers, so you might as well remove the Futurama link :(

Probably because they insulted Fox so massively.

    Now back up. Yay!

Indy IV will probably be good, I dunno if it will hold up next to the original trilogy though.

Futurama...better than The Simpsons when it had it's TV run. Been excited for the movies since the moment they were rumored, so I can't believe the first one is a month away!

Well, it may be true that this is the first time Spielberg confirmed Commie villains, but it's been more than "guessed" already. I'm pretty sure reports of Cate Blanchett being a Russian interrogator date back to June, and that's not counting all the rumors circulating way before that. If we only went by official reports we'd know next to nothing. :)

Also, there's really no reason to treat IndyIV as off-topic on Mojo. In fact it's probably the only thing that would still fit in our "LucasFilm" category if we hadn't changed it to "Film and TV." (Barring a sequel to Willow or Howard the Duck of course.) Mojo used to cover the production of the freaking Star Wars prequels, so I'll be damned if Indiana Jones doesn't slide.

I didn't even know we had a Film and TV category...

I liked Infernal Machine too! I think I gave it a respectable score.

I think GL has been cramping Spielberg's style a bit... wasn't he the one who got rid of that screenplay that might have been really good, maybe? And Spielberg's done heaps of great films, whilst GL...

I like the idea of them sticking with traditional film. And a Drew Struzan poster. And a new John Williams score. Excited? Very.

    I also like Futurama.

I think it's a bit unfair to say that Lucas is 'cramping' Spielberg's style... I mean, clearly neither of them are auteurs but at least when Lucas is involved with a bad project it's because he's testing out some new kind of technology that can later be used in a really good project.

Lucas wasn't responsible for most of the crap that Spielberg has pumped out in his lifetime. And now he's even had the temerity to jump ship to WETA for the Tintin movies. Lucas and Peter Jackson are the two big honchos now in the 'director who also plays around with emerging technology' field, and Spielberg is using them both to ruin yet more IP.

    I love Tintin :~

Uh, I agree that Spielberg's track record isn't flawless but I don't buy the "George Lucas may make terrible movies but at least he's introducing new technology" thing, sorry. Spielberg can make some sappy, manipulative shit when he tries but he's also responsible for some of the greatest movies ever, while Lucas is responsible for everything Padme and Anakin say to each other in Attack of the Clone's love scenes, and there's no room for forgiveness there. I think a better example of a director who plays around with emerging technology while still, you know, making good movies would be Robert Zemeckis.
  • elTee on 12 Oct, 2007, 07:46…
I would respectfully disagree with the Zemeckis thing ;-) But James Cameron has made a few highly entertaining state-of-the-art special effects movies.

But seriously, say what you will about Star Wars but it's a great series of movies. So is Indiana Jones, which Lucas didn't write or direct but without him the series probably wouldn't exist.

I can forgive the new-trilogy stuff to some extent because the films did what they were supposed to and entertained me. But throw as many Jaws and Schindler's Lists at me as you want and they won't make up for any of that Twilight Zone stuff. And people died horrifically for that movie.

If Indy KOCS is great I'll forgive and forget. If not, then I'll be going on about that Frank Darabont thing as long as I live. Or at least as long as HE lives.
  • The Tingler on 11 Oct, 2007, 09:43…
I linked to Frank Darabont's reaction to GL's snubbing in the news story itself. I just hope its good, so we can put it behind us...
