Happy Brutal Day 21 Apr, 2009 / Comments: 16

EA have just announced that Brütal Legend will be out this Rocktober, otherwise known as October 13th US/16th Europe for Xbox 360 and PS3.

That's my birthday! Aww, Double Fine, you shouldn't have! But I think my list said 'PC version'. Still, it's a great present, thanks!

Don't worry, other people can play it too. I'm generous like that.

That's not very far away - they must be lying.

    Hell yeah!

NO to PC version. Get away from my beloved company, you filthy pirates.

An interesting viewpoint. I bet most people here wouldn't be willing to agree, but it's definitely true that the game won't be as pirated on 360 as it would be on PC. I'm definitely OK playing it on my console, for now.

Um, no it won't. 360 games get pirated loads - especially if they're not on PC.

PC piracy is so much more widespread than console piracy that it hardly seems worth discussing.

Hmm. I know the (evident) ease of running dvd-r games on a modded 360, and of how widely circulated and easily found the ISOs are, but PC games don't require hardly any effort at all on the part of the user to pirate (though the number of users actually capable of running higher-end games like Brutal Legend on their PC's do cut that down a bit.)

I actually felt inspired to research this, and found this article

    http://www.tweakguides.com/Piracy_5.html

on Tweakguides.com. Their research sure isn't impartial, but it's interesting. I wonder how much different the data has become since this piece was written. In any case, it does seem as though piracy is a bit more harmful to that platform than it is to the consoles, since only t3h m05t harc0r3 can play stolen games on the dedicated machines.

As Tim himself has said, though, what are sales, really? Let's enjoy the game, and be content enough to have bought it legally ourselves! And anyway, if it ends up getting a simultaneous PC release, I'd definitely buy it before dusting off my 360.

World of Goo: great game, $20. Publisher went bankrupt because of a 90% piracy rate on PC.
  • neon_git on 21 Apr, 2009, 22:25…
As far as I'm aware there's no evidence that BMMs bankruptcy was because of piracy.
  • Kroms on 23 Apr, 2009, 04:02…
Of course not. But it's not like the stock holders were exactly "Yay" over a 90% piracy rate either.
  • neon_git on 23 Apr, 2009, 09:55…
Of course not. But that's not what you said, is it?
  • Kroms on 24 Apr, 2009, 02:31…
What I mean is that a 90% piracy rate would have been a significant factor in the publisher going bankrupt...
  • neon_git on 24 Apr, 2009, 13:12…
And what I'm saying is that you do not know that. Had World had a 0% piracy rate then for all we know BMM could have gone bankrupt anyway. We have no idea how significant a factor it was.

I'm not saying it wasn't (it's by no means unlikely) but, unless I missed something, there are not enough details to draw any definite conclusion.

Oh hey. I just re-checked the old news post and you're right. It got muddled in my memory.
  • Capn_Nacho on 22 Apr, 2009, 00:09…
Yeah, I'm not so sure, either, although piracy definitely was an issue there.
  • neon_git on 21 Apr, 2009, 13:57…
    Sweet!
