Get me a translator! Crimson Cow talks A Vampyre Story 2 on Facebook 18 Feb, 2012 / 10 comments

Crimson Cow Games, who hold the publishing rights to the first two A Vampyre Story games, have made a post on their Facebook page regarding the sequel, which has infamously been in a state of arrested development for three years. Unfortunately, the post is in German, so the best I can do is the best Bing can do:

Hereby, as we increasingly addressed story 2 lately on A Vampyre, we want to take this opportunity and keep you up to date. Unfortunately, there were various disagreements between developer and Publisher which resulted in that AVS 2 until today could not be published. But we work under high pressure to find a solution. This, especially your opinion interests us. What about her on the subject of episodes?

"Until today" sounds hopeful to me, and it looks like they're considering making it episodic now. I wonder what the "high pressure" refers to - are their rights about to expire? Anyway, with Crimson Cow finally talking about the game there'll probably be more to report soon.

Update from Crimson Cow on their Facebook site:
"Thank you for your feedback regarding episodes and AVS2. We will refrain from doing episodes and try to solve the problem another way."

The implication, then, is that the problem is money, and therefore nothing has really changed.

It would be worth a shot for future projects, but I don't think Bill would have the same fortune Double Fine has enjoyed if he tried to fund his games through Kickstarter. Tim's celebrity status and Double Fine's widespread (and well-earned) goodwill make them something of an outlier I should think. I'm certainly going to have my fingers crossed that the independent route Bill's taking with the AVS prequel works out or him.

Ugh, publishers. I suspect Crimson Cow is meddling with the creative process which they should leave to the expertise of the developer. Conflicts like these make me glad alternative routes exist for a developer to fund their games, such as Kickstarter.

Thanks for the language-related clarifications, all.

Where can I buy AVS1 anyway? It doesn't seem to be on Steam, is it just retail?

AVS1 is available from pretty much every digital outlet EXCEPT Steam. You can find it on GamersGate, The Adventure Shop, etc. Shop around because it might be significantly cheaper in some places than others.

My only concern about AVS2 being episodic is that it started out as a single game. If breaking it into pieces is what it takes to get it out, fine, but I'd rather an episodic game have been designed that way from the start.

Lately people have asked us a lot about AVS 2, so we want to take this opportunity to keep you in the loop. Unfortunately, there have been several disagreements between the developer and the publisher which led to the fact that AVS has not been published so far. We are working tirelessly to find a solution. For this process we are very interested in your opinion - what do you think about episodes?

("under high pressure" from German just means they are trying really hard)

They are being asked about AVS2 a lot recently and they are working on a solution, but nothing final to report. So they ask about our oppinion on episodic titles.
