GameSpot Wants to Fandango 28 Apr, 2002, 08:49 / 17 comments

GameSpot.com, continuing in their "Games That Should Be Remade" series, has written an article about Grim Fandango. While GameSpot doesn't claim that they'd like to see the original game recreated, they do plead for another story set in this world. Here's a quote:
Sadly, Grim Fandango was Schafer's last project for the company, as he left LucasArts shortly after the game was completed. So the chances of seeing the return of Manny Calavera, Glottis, and the Bone Wagon are pretty slim, to say the least. But we'd still like to see another Grim Fandango game--one that would have the kind of beautiful artistic design and hilarious writing of the original game. And even though it's unlikely, we would like to see some continuation of the story, or at least have one more chance to visit with Manny, Glottis, Meche, Sal, and the rest of Grim Fandango's great cast.
Thanks to Tomas for the news!

Quite frankly I am happy that when CNet swallowed ZDnet (or whatever they used to be called) Gamecenter fell through and Gamespot was kept afloat (on a completely tangent note, that "MAKE $500" flashing banner on the right of this screen is giving me seizures) because Gamecenter was THE mortician for the adventure genre, embalming, burying and singing caustic eulogies on the gravesite of classical adventures day after day, while Gamespot is still keen on making, somewhat pathetic -- but charmingly so -- melancholy pleas for more adventure games.

I am sick and tired of hearing about adventure game death. Isn't death supposed to be somehting instantenious, then everlasting?

Otherwise, adventure games are a Shakesperian character who throws out the best monologues in the moment of his death, The rest is silence... and then like Desdemona, wakes up to say three words before dying again...

I know. Why do they say adventure games are dead just because they're old? I mean there still gonna make seqals. I mean, is Zak Mckracken, Sam and Max, and Monkey Island dead? No! LEC is makeing seqals!
  • Kingzjester on 29 Apr, 2002, 16:07…
There are no OFFICIAL sequels planned for Zak McKracken out there, while Sam'n'Max is being made by some wild'n'crazy nonLEC company (probably won't be an adventure game) and Escape from Monkey Island still seems to me like somehting made just to get it over with... Damn Smurf villages and lugubriously wrong plot twists... I tried to play the damn thing again and it still sucked big time... I had the same feeling when playing Sam'n'Max... Hm... I'm drawing a paralel here: Who led those two projects I wonder???

I know, I know. Zak2 isn't gonna happen. I did that ask the swami thing and asked if they have any release dates. So they Email me back and say "No we don't have any release dates but we're working on it ;-)" There it is, The Wink. But still, EMI and Sam n' Max don't suck. EMI wasn't just there to get it over with. Guybrush has got an UNBREAKABLE 5 game contract. they had to Make EMI. And I'm not saying it sucks. Sam n' Max IS weird, but it don't suck.

LEC was only affiliated with Sam & Max because Steve Purcell was working there doing art. And the "wild'n'crazy nonLEC company" is a company composed originally of the Jedi Knight 1 team. Sort of like how Tim Schafer's company Double Fine started out with a large chunk of the Grim Fandango team and some friends.

Also I agree that the story in Hit the Road was sort of clunky at parts but whatever. So are the comics. Doesn't mean that it's not fun or funny.

Wow, I thought I was the only one who didn't like Sam and Max or EMI that much. More power to ya, man.
  • SamNMax on 30 Apr, 2002, 13:44…
DANM IT! EVERYBODY SHUT THE HELL UP ABOUT SA N'MAX AND EMI!!! WHY WOULDN'T EVERYBODY OUT THERE IN MOJO LIKE THEM!?
  • SamNMax on 30 Apr, 2002, 13:46…
Sorry about that. I always get very mad when I get overpowered by people from the Internet.
  • Trapezoid on 29 Apr, 2002, 18:22…
Woah! You didn't like Sam'n'Max? Man. Sorry, tough break. Trust me, it's a lot more fun liking it than hating it. Same with EMI.
  • SamNMax on 30 Apr, 2002, 13:47…
    Thank you.

Still, I don't think there should be a sequel with Manny and the other characters in it. Their story has come to an end in Grim Fandango and I don't see why and how there could be a reasonable part 2 (of course they could make up something to).
However, a game with the same setting and art style wouldn't be that bad. And I surely wouldn't mind some references to Manny, Meche and Otis (like people talking about them or similar).
  • SamNMax on 29 Apr, 2002, 14:04…
Yep. How are they gonna make GF2? Manny and Meche is in Hevan and Hecter and Dom are dead... Again. What are they gonna do? Make a game called "Glottis and the Mystery of the Missing Wrench"? And I'm not just yammering on and on about how they can't make GF2 just because of Shafer. They just can't do it. It's like trying to make a movie called "How I got a Job Working for Searra"!

It's like I've said all along, we don't need to continue Manny's story, he's crossed over and that's that. The Land of the Dead is what needs more exploring. I'd like to see a game another soul's journey.

I don't get it. How can adventure games be dead if Gamespot writes an article about them more than once a week?
  • Jake on 28 Apr, 2002, 16:19…
One adventure article every week and a half to go with the 30 or so not-adventure stories that they run each day :)
  • Gabez on 28 Apr, 2002, 12:14…
    Because they're cool.
  • Metallus on 01 May, 2002, 00:33…
Because they're cool, they can be dead? GABEZ YUO AER TEHCRAZE.
