Galaxies Feature Postponements 05 Feb, 2003, 11:19 / 8 comments

Now that LucasArts has posted the final feature list for Galaxies, many people are noticing that a couple really big features from the original lists are strangely absent. Galaxies producer Haden Blackman (a.k.a. "Shug_Ninx") has written a lengthy post in the Galaxies forum discussing why each feature was cut, and when they'll be re-added with patches.

Another boring MMORPG with nothing new. These features were ONLY features that differ this game from others, now it is another world with light sabre instead of staff in the hand. Sorry LucasArts but you should have delayed it to incorporate these features...

And between did you look at the post, and fanboys on the page. Everyone thanking Haden for dropping the features, very few intelligent posts..
    >Thanks Haden
    >Love you Haden
    >Wonderful Haden
    >Great Haden

    Pathetic!

Honestly, I could care less about this game. It's an MMORPG, and I don't care if it is Star Wars, nobody should have to pay a monthly fee for a video game.

But... I know that this game is going to bring in wheelbarrows of cash for LucasArts (Or LucasConglomerate, or LucasBigAssCompany, or whatever they're called now), cash that can be spent on more adventure games. So I hope Galaxies does well.

How will they pay staff to update the game every day/week with new content if they're not getting any revenue 6 months into the games life? This thing is supposed to last for years. The price they're asking is probably too high, but it seems like with a game like this (versus an online game like Quake where you just battle it out in the premade levels over and over) a subscrpition is a fair thing to ask of people.

I understand all that. I understand the need for the monthly fee. I'm just saying that for me personally, it's too much to ask, and I won't pay it. If they were to find some other source of constant revenue, and eliminate the subscription, I'd buy the game in a heartbeat.

I'd be willing to put up with a few minutes of advertising every time I start up the game, if it saved me the cost of the monthly subscription.

doesn't The Sims Online have product advertisement tied into the game? (like the sims drinking CocaCola and using Apple computer and such)
I think that's a good source of revenue too.

err... though CocaCola drinking Jedi might work against the fantasy atmosphere.

The problem with that, of course, is that ad revenue is way, way down. Especially on the net.

Oh well. I'm not complaining. I wasn't gonna get Galaxies until the space exploration expansion comes out, and it seems all the missing features will be added through patches by the time the expansion hits the shelf anyway.
