First New SWG Space Screenshots in Years 20 Apr, 2004, 18:25 / 18 comments

For those who grew up on the original Larry Holland X-Wing Combat Simulators, and have been left cold with the recent 'arcadey' Starfighter & Rogue Squadron type titles coming out of LucasArts, here's some exciting news.

New information about the long-awaited Space Expansion to Star Wars Galaxies has finally been revealed. IGN has this new article and posted these nine stunning looking in-game screenshots.
IGNPC: A lot of us have fond memories of TIE Fighter and the other space games Lucas has published. How directly has that legacy inspired (or even intimidated) you?

Haden Blackman: It's definitely inspired everyone on the development team. We're very determined to capture the feel of the X-Wing and TIE Fighter titles. In many ways, we're looking at Jump to Lightspeed as "X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter" online - much of our focus is on that dogfighting experience.
Check out the full interview and screenshots here.

Update: There are two new official webpages where you can check out the the latest "Jump to Hyperspace" info, FAQ, screenshots, concept art, and movies; View these pages at starwarsgalaxies.com and lucasarts.com

GameSpy: Will a player be able to jump into space from the moment he or she purchases the expansion, or will vehicles have to be built and purchased from players?
Cinco Barnes: Although you won't get a very good starship to begin with, you do have the option of leaping into space right away. All of the finest ships (with the best performance statistics, the most survivable qualities, and the greatest potential for upgrade) will be constructed by other players.

    :-)

ahaaaaa.... that's how they're announcing their E3 Lineup. they announce thei new games in other major game sites before their site. that's how they get the MAJOR attention! nice business strategy ;)

oh what wouldn't i give for another X-wing game.
  • Bc9b on 21 Apr, 2004, 18:06…
I they make up some sort of way to play it without haveing to buy galixies, or am I just mistaken.
  • jp-30 on 21 Apr, 2004, 19:49…
You need to already have a Galaxies account, and to have your character earn enough money to buy a spaceship.

Stunning screenshots ? X-Wing Alliance is not so "wrinkled" compared to these...
And graphics are not THAT important.
Who would like to subscribe SWG when they cancel Sam and Max 2 for nonsense big bucks reasons (yes, i am still mad at them) ?

I think you're memories are rose tinted. I played X-Wing Alliance very recently, it DOES look pretty aged (although not TOO bad). Certainly nowhere near these graphics, though.

(Of course, like you said, good graphics aren't the only important thing!)
  • Guyfrench Threepwood on 22 Apr, 2004, 17:57…
Yes, my memories are "rose tinted" : I remember a few years ago, when Lucasarts was a synonym of creativity and fun.
Who would dare today to develop a space flight sim based on "The Godfather" ? Or a game 80% finished the whole community awaits since 1994 (yes, Sam n Max 2, I'm still mad at them) ?Not the Lucasarts executive obviously...

A MMORPG will never be 'finished' though. They'll be tweaking and adding contend and mucking about forever. If users had to wait until the main part was "complete" before getting Space, they'd be waiting a long, long time.

What I want to know is what will the Space Expansion be able to offer someone like me who has no interest in all the land based carry-on? Nothing, I assume as you can't progress in Space without sufficient time investment in the normal Galaxies game. :-(

I knew someone would say this. The things I'm talking about are everyday game mechanics... the whole combat system is pretty much foobar at the moment (and has been since release). I play as a Pistoleer and I think, 2 out of 9 Pistoleer "specials" are working at the moment. That's not tweaking, it's flawed :(

If you click NEW EMAIL it opens 10 new screens and has done since the game was released. You have to select USE TICKET COLLECTOR no less than three times before you get a response from the game. Again, that's been there since July when I started.

    *sigh*

    And I still keep p(l)aying :/
  • ThunderPeel2001 on 20 Apr, 2004, 23:18…
I doubt you have to invest a significant amount of time to get into "space" either, so I wouldn't worry about that.
  • jp-30 on 20 Apr, 2004, 23:54…
Sorry I misunderstood what you meant. Those bugs sound terrible. Do you know if *everyone* experiences them, or could it be a server / lag issue?

Anyway, good to hear your opinions on being able to play even without too much ground based carry on necessary, thoough obviously your character has to earn the credits to buy his first spaceship somehow.
  • ThunderPeel2001 on 21 Apr, 2004, 13:54…
Hmmm, I don't know. I think it might be mission based: Join the Imperials or the Rebels and do missions for them. In theory it could be REALLY cool. But that's what we said about SWG before it was released, lol! :)
  • ThunderPeel2001 on 21 Apr, 2004, 16:13…
Wow, turns out you're right! You will have to build up your character a bit before hand. Hmmm!
  • ThunderPeel2001 on 20 Apr, 2004, 20:30…
Hmmm. The main part of the game hasn't even been finished yet (they're still "balancing" the combat professions and getting around to redoing the Jedi path) and there's a whole new expansion nearly done! Hmph!

Ack. Sorry - my comment above was supposed to be a reply to this.
