Finally, a US Monkey Island Compilation 05 Dec, 2003 / Comments: 15

As pointed out on our forums, LucasArts has recently made available a special bundle offer featuring all four Monkey Island games in one pack. To preemptively dash any hopes that this is some sort of collectors edition, the page specifically states that the games do not ship in a compilation box, but instead come in jewel cases and CD sleeves. Most likely that means you'll get Monkey Island 1 and 2 via the "Monkey Madness" CD in a paper sleeve, and both CMI and EMI in their budget jewel case editions.

However, the lack of collectability comes with the upside that it only costs $27.95. That's a damn good deal for anyone, so we expect you to buy them up until LEC is 100% out of stock, forcing them to re-print everything as a lovely deluxe boxed set that you won't be able to afford after buying out all the current cheap ones*. Honestly though, buy them for all your friends for Christmas and then insist over and over again that they play them. Also tell them to read Mojo.<:MORENEWS:>

* You all becoming poor and unable to afford it will then hopefully cause LucasArts to lower the price of this hypothetical deluxe edition (which will never realistically exist, but shh), allowing broke Jake to afford it, and finally throw out his pirated Mac copies of Monkey 1 and 2 that he got from his friend Andrew* in 5th grade.

* No, not tel, a different Andrew.

I know that this is just repeating the obvious and my appreciation will probably not get noticed by the right people, but here goes anyway.

ScummVM rocks! There is now two ways about it. Man, I mean, how awesome is that that I can just sit here at 4 o'clock in the morning and pop Fate of Atlantis or DOTT into my brand new computer and have them work... with sound and everything! So, anyway, whoever you are I really appreciate it. Thanks!

I remember when I first played Secret of Monkey Island... it was the pirated 16-color spanish version... now I have 3 legal copies. :P

Maybe with this quadrilogy it means that the Monkey Island series is finally over? who cares :P

Monkey Island over? Or perhaps it's a big promotional push for MI5!

More likely, it's a plan to make more money. You can by Curse and Escape off amazon for 7 bucks a piece. Heck, even if you buy the Archive Series and Escape from the Company store it'd be less. Still, 27 dollars isn't a bad price, i guess.

Like I put in my post - the "Collector's Edition" of all 4 games has a unique box in my corner of the world (New Zealand)

Here's the box art - the box is the double the size of your regular MI box.

I want that box, it would make my MI collection more compleate. They want over $100 CAN on ebay for that thing...

All I want is the box.

Oh well I have my french CMI, LeChuck is funny in french.

I suppose this also means that the games won't be given the Aaron Giles treatment of making the games work properly on newer versions of Windows. Blah.

    scummvm will cure that

Amusingly, I suspect LEC are far too stubborn to consider mentioning this in the documentation or anything, resulting in a load of angry Monkey Island fans going on the rampage, burning effigies of George Lucas and the like.

I don't know, how do people purchasing early LEC games for the first time get them running? I can't believe all of them (or even most of them) discover the delights of ScummVM by themselves...

On the LucasArts Archive box it's actually stated that MI1 & 2 won't work with newer OSs, like WinME. You'd think it would be easier if they just put a mention about ScummVM. ?

I would imagine that officially endorsing ScummVM would cause them some legal headaches. For example, if they ever decided to C&D or sue ScummVM (not that I want them to), the fact that they recommended their product wouldn't help their case much in front of a judge.
  • Remi O on 06 Dec, 2003, 00:26…
Well, they did receive a C&D letter a while back, so the odds of it happening is probably zero. Personally I think it would be some much needed goodwill towards the customer to tell then how to get the game working in newer OSs since they're not upgrading the MI games like they did with Sam & Max and what not. LEC should look to Revolution and what they did with BASS and ScummVM, but I'm not holding my breath on that on.

And with "it happening" I mean "LEC recommending it". We need the Edit function back. :~~~

Easier still if they distributed scummVM on a CD with the pack. ;-)

You have to love The LucasArts Way, while pointing and laughing. Cue massive rant about the free-and-easy kudos and positive publicity to be obtained by "doing a Revolution". I've seen Beneath a Steel Sky mentioned in more places than ever before since they released it for free with ScummVM support. (rant continues, merges seamlessly into communist party manifesto)

How strange. I had a dream months ago that I saw the four Monkey Island? games in a compilation, except that they were in four DVD cases like the Entertainment Pack (possibly suggesting that MI 1&2 were remade) and the purple colour was replaced by a sandy texture (much like the Bounty Pack)
