Exclusive TMI gameplay video 01 Jul, 2009 / Comments: 16

You should probably just not watch this as the first episode of Tales of Monkey Island comes out a mere seven days from now, but those of you who want to plunder the spoilerific surprises of (I assume to be) the game's opening sequence can follow this link to Gamespot's exclusive video footage of it. Don't watch this.

Yarr!

Update: It's no longer quite so exclusive, with Telltale putting it up on their blog in handy Youtube form.

I actually think I might prefer the new LeChuck voice over Earl Boen's. Well, over his retarded LeChuck in EMI anyway. In Curse he was perfect.

What I'm not sure if it is a good idea is that Guybrush is so confident of his skills all the time.

Visually it looks poor I must say. A 3d Bill Tiller doesnt exist and never will be.
Monkey Island's back. Just that. I cant ask more after all this time. I wasnt going to bet a piece of 8 for a Guybrush return.
Welcome back, deep in the caribbean, and this is not our last hope. Infact... "no there is another !"

Impressive. Squint your eye, pretend like it's in early 90s 2D and that you're reading the dialogue, and I'd say it is more reminiscent of the first two games than the last two.

I'd plotz myself if some ambitious fan-folk opted to make a 2D VGA version of EMI. And that's the tooth.

On a kind of unrelated topic, I've always had the horrifying suspicion that a lot of people who don't like EMI would like it more if it was the exact same game but in 256 color MI1 style 2D.

I kind of liked EMI the first time I played it, sort of how I liked the Phanton menance the first time... then the more it lingers in your thoughts and you revisit it, its kinda sucky.

3D has nothing to do with it. Lame humour, not very piratey (star bucks, robot monkeys etc), contradiction of storylines (such as Lechuck saying he knocked Captain Marleys Ship in CMI, then herman saying it was Ozzie), annoying puzzles, need i say more.

    Definitely.
  • Kroms on 01 Jul, 2009, 18:56…
Oh, that's a definite. A lot of them simply hate it for the 3D. Arrested development gone extreme

I don't hate it for the 3D. In fact, I don't hate it at all, but one of the reasons I found it a disappointment was that it was so visually poor. I do think that matters, it changes my perception of the game, but I do also think the plot was a mess compared with the previous games and that it was just not as funny.

I really like the way Tales looks so far, and the intro video made me laugh, so I've got hopes.

I think it looks pretty good really. I can help agree with Kroms though, LeChuck's "yarh" every 20 seconds was annoying. And his voice doesn't have much character, sounds like one of the telltale developers putting on a pirate accent.

Guybrush and Elaine sound awesome! :)

Humour reminds me of the more crass Escape, then the first three classics unfortunately.

Wow, I only watched like 30 seconds but I was very impressed by LeChuck's voice. It's clearly not Earl, but it's close enough that I don't really care.

The music is naturally amazing, too.
  • Kroms on 01 Jul, 2009, 09:39…
Wait, no. His voice is good. I think what's wrong with LeChuck is his constant "Yarr". He says it > 20 times in 3 minutes.

Otherwise, Telltale you have exceeded my expectations once again. What would I do without you?
  • The Tingler on 01 Jul, 2009, 21:34…
Agreed. Plus I miss Earl Boen's "DARRRRGH!"
  • Capn_Nacho on 01 Jul, 2009, 04:52…
Wish I hadn't spoiled this, but there's no gameplay, really, so no puzzles ruined.

This opening cinematic bit is pretty promising. Great music, pretty nice graphics (with depth of field effects, I think?), TTG's always great animation (especially in the much-improved-over-S&M lipsync department, though some of the poses felt a little limp) and most importantly, as black_sheep noted, LeChuck's voice is a more-than-satisfactory Earl Boen impersonation. I was really worried about this from the trailer, but he sounds pretty dang good.

    One week!

  • Kroms on 01 Jul, 2009, 09:00…
I like MOST of it, but LeChuck's voice is a bit off. I think it's something I'll get used to, though, like with Sam and Max.
  • black_sheep on 01 Jul, 2009, 03:30…
All i can say is: WOW. I only let myself watch for maybe 15 seconds and I am more than pleased from what I saw of that E3 trailer. The music is outstanding, LeChuck's voice is on the spot, way better than what I have expected, the atmosphere is just amazing! I can't wait for next week, it's gonna be one hell of a day!

oh yeah, I forgot one thing, MONKEY ISLAND IS TOTALLY BACK!
