Double Fine and EA release Brütal Legend! 13 Oct, 2009 / Comments: 17

Another Double Fine game has been released, and that can only mean one thing (besides the fact that we've all aged considerably): good times. It's been a long wait, from the first rumors of the game being multiplayer, to the shockingly ironic announcement of the game being published by Sierra, to the even more shocking and ironic development that the game had fallen into the same six month, publisher-less limbo Psychonauts endured following the Activision merger. But after four and half years of waiting, Brütal Legend has arrived on the Xbox 360 and PS3 for all [who own those consoles] to enjoy.

The Europeans, who have only to hang in there three more days, are probably worth a mention too.

If this game doesn't win the Best Main Menu award, there's no justice.

    I prefer classical.

But they say that classical music and metal have many similarities...

    Who is "they"?

Metal has strong roots in Classical music. it has often been said that in Mozart had lived today he would most likely be a metal musican as that that is what is most similar in this age. I dont have links for this stuff but i would reccomend the documentary Metal: a Headbangers Journey. The root of metal run deep indeed. Also see here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_metal_music

I just heard that Jack Black was on Jimmy Kimmel Live here in the states (I missed it though) Have to figure he was there to plug Brutal Legend...just thought someone here at Mojo would like to know

I hereby nominate Brütal Legend for the mojo "Raddest Fucking Game Ever" award, it sounds appropriate. Ive been seriously hooked on the game all day, the open world is incredibly well done and entertaining.

just to be clear, i used profanity because a wussy sounding award like "Game of the Year" doesnt quite cut it

(Also to be clear TMI doesnt counts as merely being MI elevates it to Game Godhood and as such is not fair.)

Mannnn that's a relief. There's a some critics saying the gameplay isn't up to standard.

I've come to accept that, from the small sample provided so far, Tim Schafer games will always appeal to Tim Schafer fans more. I know for a fact that while it's a decent platformer, there are several things in Psychonauts that would annoy the hell out of me but I choose to ignore them to bask in more Schafery goodness.

I'm sure Brutal Legend is similar in this respect, and so perhaps it shouldn't be too surprising that some reviewers are less tolerant of percieved flaws than others.

Some of the blame might also be on the promotion of the game, which really didn't do enough to promote the RTS-ish side of the game which seems to be very significant. I'm sure a lot of people weren't playing the game they expected or wanted to be playing.

Nevertheless, I'm not worried, I'm sure I'll love it.

Tom Chick's review captures my surmised feelings pretty well: it's heartfelt, awe-inspiring, genuine, but quite flawed. So, I hope if they make a sequel, they will fix that.

(Although, to be honest, I never found anything to dislike about Psychonauts' gameplay, apart from the fricking Meat Circus.)

Yes, agree with this. A lot of the problems with Psychonauts and (what I've heard of) Brutal Legend stems from general inexperience in the genre or that gameplay style. You can only learn things by trying and making mistakes. Why do you think LucasArts got so good at making adventure games? I wouldn't say they achieved perfection until Monkey Island 2, after four attempts (five if you count Labyrinth).

Nevertheless, what keeps people playing and talking about them isn't the gameplay faults, it's because they're made with so much care, love and a great sense of fun that you can't help telling the whole world how great it is.

You can get it pretty much everywhere here in Holland, no need to wait for friday if you're in Europe! I played with it for a bit, and man, is it awesome. It's even better than I expected. I'm not lying, this might end up as my favorite Schafer-game.

I keep hearing things about it possibly being available in the UK already too. I'm strolling into town tomorrow I think...

Europeans have to wait three more days? Pah! PC gamers have too wait like... possibly forever.

Tim, for your next project, can you come back to Adventure Games, please?
  • Sp0tted on 13 Oct, 2009, 23:39…
    No Xbox, no Brutal...

Ah well, I suppose flash games will have to suffice
