DOTT Special Edition to Use New Art Assets 15 Sep, 2015 / 8 comments

Sources inside Double Fine have revealed that the upcoming Day of the Tentacle: Special Edition will only feature new art assets.

This means that it won't be using any of the Singapore artwork created for the abandoned LucasArts Special Edition, which was rumoured to have been 80% complete at the time of its cancellation (but which Double Fine refuse to acknowledge the existence, or non-existence, of).

The new Special Edition is due out sometime next year, and will feature newly recovered higher quality audio dialogue, a team commentary, higher resolution graphics, and undoubtedly lots of other things that have yet to be revealed.

Double Fine have stated that we will be seeing more of the game before of the end of the year, which hopefully means tomorrow, but probably means December.

That's because Singapore wasn't actually 80% done with the game.

It was 100% done with the Monkey Island games...

What was 100% done? I'm not sure I understand what you're saying. The rumors were that Singapore was 80% complete with DOTT, but that wasn't really true. I'm guessing that's why DF isn't speaking up about it. Or they don't want Sony to know they're taking a bunch of their money to complete 20% of a finished game.

I am not surprised. The art in the Monkey Island Special editions was also quite lazy and cheaply done in the sweatshop.

I just beat this game for the 4,348 time recently, and I'm still excited for the remake.

In other news, looks like that amazon listing was right about Biff and Tom Wilson.

Yeah, they initially confirmed its existence and said that the backgrounds looked "very promising" and that they were "very happy" with what they'd seen. I don't quite follow why they wouldn't be able to use them -- I assumed it was because they turned out to be not so good on second glance rather than legal issues... but who knows. DF Bert said the reasons weren't very hard to imagine, which makes me think it's a quality issue... I can't understand why there'd be a legal issue.

It's amusing to imagine what happened between the initial openness about the LEC Singapore assets and the "We can neither confirm nor deny" mantra. I mean, they're licensing the IP from Lucasfilm so, it stands to reason they could access the material even if they don't use it?
