Costume Quest previewed 10 Aug, 2010 / 15 comments

This here is the very first preview written about Costume Quest, the Halloween-themed Double Fine follow-up to last year's Brutal Legend. It's the first of four games Double Fine are currently working-on, and is being headed by former Pixar animator Tasha Harris, who you may know as a webcomic artist who has gone deep, deep undercover as herself.

Here's a preview - if you will - of the preview:

Make no mistake, though, Costume Quest is very much a Double Fine, or Schafer-esque, game. Set on Halloween night across spookified suburbs, rundown carnival rides, and a local mall, the story follows a young boy searching for his little sister. Costume Quest feels familiar -- like a lost SNES role-playing adventure ported in high-definition 3D -- and laugh out loud funny -- like Double Fine's catalogue.

Spicy! Like pumpkins. Special thanks to the indispensable Pinchpenny for alerting us to this here news. Christmas has come early. Or it's Ramadan in this country I live in. Either way, I'm excited.

Tee, I actually applied for a job with them around the post-Psychonauts hiring push (I have about three years of design experience for a Canadian studio), in the hopes of getting a nibble. They actually took the time to call and let me know that I wasn't in the pool for that position, but that they'd keep my resume' on file.

That's their story, and I'm sticking to it. :D

Deathspank is technically console-only at this point.

I thought you of all people would've got the subtle reference to that in my words, Kroms! :)

Still... no PC. A download-only title... that's not for PC. Sorry, can't get my head around that. I've never seen a Mojo game be a download-only console game before, and if I had I wouldn't have bought it.

As its published by THQ I assumed it was going to be a budget retail title.

    Haha Tingler, if you had a problem with games not coming out on PC maybe you should have mentioned it earlier! Perhaps they would have listened to you ;

1UP said the magic word for me: Earthbound-inspired. Oh, and the Double Fine-developed thing and out-in-two-months thing are good too!!

Looks nice! I hope it will be funnier than Brutal Legend, which was kind of a disappointment to me. It felt almost... incomplete.

Yep, this looks interesting. Could be a strongly atmospheric game that isn't too heavy but delivers on gameplay.

    Would love a demo.

Whoa. Wasn't expecting something like this at all. It's so weird that they're suddenly working on so many games and one of them is actually coming out soon.

I really have to get used to the idea of these smaller games. This one looks so different in style from the other Double Fine games. Looking more deeply into this, I'm getting more excited by the minute. I would buy this anyway, Double Fine has never let me down.

Us PC and Wii owners have money we'd love to give you too, Mr Schafer!

Ah Melancholick, you should apply for another job at Double Fine... four games, they must be hiring!

Man, I have to admit a ridiculous amount of anticipation for this, just based off of the teaser info. It's immediately evoking memories of "Zombies Ate My Neighbors" (Don't ask me why), and I couldn't agree more elTee on the creativity initiative that Double Fine's apparently putting into play. I don't doubt that Mr. "Shafer" hires talent who reflect his own brand of quirky brilliance, so I'm looking forward to seeing what this new blood can bring out for the studio.

    I am digging this title.

I'm so happy that Schafer is finally letting some of his underlings helm their own games. There's so much talent at Doublefine. Can't wait for the other three games to be announced, either :D
