Backstage With Tim Schafer 19 Aug, 2008 / Comments: 6

Just to prove I don't just make Star Wars posts on this site, occasionally I can even point your way to something actually interesting. Like this: a new interview with Tim Schafer at The Escapist.

There's a few things of interest in there, especially his correction that Psychonauts was not a flop as many believe - or as he suggests, actually want to believe.

Oh, and there's a quick glimmer of hope for Brütal Legend, where the interviewer suggests that it's still possible that Activision may pick up the title - they're still currently just "reviewing their options" about the Sierra games they haven't taken yet.

    Huh about the Activision stuff.

I also find it kinda funny that Tim has had to assure people that Psychonauts was not a flop just like he did with Grim Fandango.

Fandango wasn't a flop though, was it? It just didn't live up to expectations.

I think the reason Grim and Psychonauts were labeled as flops was because their initial sales, which are most important to the publishers, weren't necessarily amazing. However, both games are the type that can have extremely healthy longterm sales, which of course they both did.

It's probably also worth noting that both games had extremely huge budgets, and that with Grim LucasArts invested in a lot of brand new technology.

Interesting. What kind of new technology they invested in?

It was a brand new adventure game engine to replace the aging SCUMM system, and of course the Lua stuff that's still cropping up in many games now.

I hope you mean monetary expectations! ;)
