Attack of Sam & Max? 22 Aug, 2001, 16:23 / 26 comments

Adventuregamers.com is reporting on the possibility of a new Sam and Max game... but without LucasArts? Here's what they say:

PC Gamer's newest issue features the Top 50 Games of All-Time list. Sam & Max Hit the Road comes in at #47, and the blurb answers a question that many adventure gamers have been asking:

"What's next? While the flow of adventures from LucasArts has dwindled to a trickle, a source close to the project tells us that developer Infinite Machine is quietly working on a new console game using the Sam & Max license but without LucasArts publishing."

In case you're unfamiliar, Infinite Machine is a new game company that was established by Dark Forces and Jedi Knight creator, Justin Chin. Well, if there is any truth to these reports, at least a few ex-LucasArts employees will be able to work on it. Many thanks to Adventuregamers.com for this report!

Sam n Max is about the only LEC game which could have a sequel at all.

    Loom?

I mean, IIRC that ending was not meant as an artistic statement (which I'd have no problems with) but as the end of a first epsiode of a saga. That would be a game that would be interesting to see what they'd make of...

I could only imagine a Loom prequel (Like those tapes I've never actually listened to) giving a sequel to Loom would be pretty much the same as giving us a Grim 2. It would basically be the same storyline I reckon. Anyone agree?
  • Trinity on 26 Aug, 2001, 14:09…
Yeah. The ending of Loom should be left alone, but a game about Bobbin's mother, that would be interesting.

Monkey Island has at least 2 times already that it is sequel worthy... so has Maniac Mansion... Full Throttle has a decently ambiguous (but good and solid) ending... Don't forget indiana jones which is about as serial as Sam & Max. I agree that Sam & Max would be the best sequel, though, since the stories don't have to depend on each other at all (its in fact better when they don't), and I run a Sam & Max site. That doesn't mean its the only game that would make for a good sequel, though. The only sequel I dont really want to see ever is Grim.

You don't want a sequel to Grim? That would be awesome though! Not quite a sequel though, because I don't really want to know where Manny ends up after the train ride. But I do think that too much of the Land of the Dead was left unexplored, and I'd love to see a new storyline starring a different character. Think Discworld Noir vs. the first two DWs. It could even take place simultaneously as the first game... I think that'd be cool, because you could see some of the hidden elements from the first game's plot. Oh, and more of that creepy screwed up Land of the Living.

I can't believe this that there is going to be a new sam and max game but I say is what about us with pc's. Sam and max hit the road was on pc! Why not the new one?? Well it hasn't been confirmed for xbox has it??
  • Metallus on 27 Aug, 2001, 20:40…
If they have any human decency, they're not going to force us onto consoles. They will make a PC version if they want it to sell. If they don't, start pummelling.

ok this is kind of news to me, cuz i just talked to steve purcell at comic con and he said that he was planing a game but nothing really has been done. he said if they do a game it has to be more of a action game
  • Glottis on 23 Aug, 2001, 02:33…
OKay, with a Schaefer game, and probably a Sam n' Max game coming out for the Xbox, im gonna have to get me one of those.
  • PTDC on 22 Aug, 2001, 20:41…
Sounds good. I always thought the sub games were one of the best parts of Sam & Max hit the road.
  • iisaac on 22 Aug, 2001, 22:50…
It's a dream come true. The game will debut on the GameCube and become an instant success, topping Pokemon in general sales and sex in popularity.

I believe Infinite Machine, like Double Fine (tim schafers company), is an XBox developer... Wish they were Gamecube though.
  • iisaac on 23 Aug, 2001, 08:45…
The Unofficial craves to be updated.
  • mercatfat on 23 Aug, 2001, 05:03…
It's suprising that there's so much support for the X-Box, when it's ultimately doomed to fail. That's not opinion, that's Fact.I mean, for christ sakes, just because it's it's like a PC doesn't mean it should cost like one.

"When we came up with the program, we wanted it to be what's best for retailers," Microsoft spokesman James Bernard said. "This is based on what retailers told us they wanted."

feh. maybe do whats best for your customers so your console wont rot on the shelves? eh? eh? and merc that high price is because it comes with an assload of (potentially unwanted) games and periphs.

  • Jake on 23 Aug, 2001, 18:21…
You get instant support for your console by simply bankrolling development houses and telling them to make games for you.
  • Remi O on 23 Aug, 2001, 15:04…
It'll do fine, as long as the games don't suck as bad as the PS2 games.
  • Pedgey on 23 Aug, 2001, 12:26…
Meh! wait 2 months and the price will drop and you will be able to just walk into a shop and pick one up off the shelf... remember all those people who paniced over getting a preorder PS2 only to realise that if they hadnt been so stupid and waited a month they could have saved about ?100...
  • PTDC on 23 Aug, 2001, 08:26…
The upside to the XBOX is that the games are relatively easy to port to the PC.
  • ZeroXcape on 22 Aug, 2001, 17:32…
Infinite Machine? I don't see why they'd want the Sam & Max license anyway. If they do have something to do w/Sam & Max, let's hope it doesn't get thrown on the Xbox...
  • Metallus on 22 Aug, 2001, 21:54…
I shudder to think that they make a Sam and Max game that I can't afford to play.
  • spaff on 22 Aug, 2001, 22:46…
im assuming they were friends with steve before he left. - id heard they mihgt be working on this too :)
  • Remi O on 22 Aug, 2001, 17:23…
Hmmm... Steve Purcell hinted that he wanted more of an action/adventure if they were to make another Sam & Max game... Wonder if this could be it.
