Al Lowe Talks LEC 18 Jun, 2002 / Comments: 16

A new interview with Leisure Suit Larry creator Al Lowe has been conducted by Adventure-Treff. As you all know but probably shouldn't, Leisure Suit Larry was a comedy series of sexually raunchy adventure games released by Sierra. Although the Larry series never had any involvement with LucasArts, Al Lowe does discuss his current views with the company during the interview. Here's a quote:
A-T: Let's talk about LucasArts. Do you like their adventures?

Al: I used to. The Monkey Island games are some of my all-time favorites. But lately, what they call adventure doesn't sit with what I consider to be adventure.

Larry 7 is one of the most hilarious game.

I like the Larry games and I find Al Lowe's humor funny, but I'm not to crazy about his other games. ("Torin's Passage" is actually the only other game of his I have played and I didn't like it.)

However, it seemed like he didn't really care for this interview. Most of the answers are short and dismissive.

He offered us to do a phone interview, but we didn't have the possibility to make one. Al said that he talks faster than he types. So on the phone his answers would have been longer...
And when he said that he doesn't like the more recent "adventures" he talked about Infernal Machine kind "adventures", not Grim or EMI.
And I like his games. They're fun!

To be fair, those aren't Lucasarts' definition of 'adventure' games, they are the industry's definition.

What Al Lowe calls funny doesn't sit with what I consider to be funny.

OMG LEISURE SUIT LARRY SO FUNEH!!11

FOR THE FORTUNE AND GLORY, YES.

    Doesn't make sense:

"A-T: Let's talk about LucasArts. Do you like their adventures?

Al: I used to. The Monkey Island games are some of my all-time favorites. But lately, what they call adventure doesn't sit with what I consider to be adventure."

"A-T: What do you think about the more recent adventures like Simon 3D, Monkey 4, Grim, The longest Journey? Did you play them?

Al: Yes. They were great, weren't they?"

Does he like the newer LucasArts games or not?

I think he was talking about FTII and RTX and Infernal Machine type "adventures."
  • Jayel on 18 Jun, 2002, 23:04…
He probably played the demos so he could say "yes" to "did you play them" questions. :)

I thought Larry 3 was a great game, but the rest, ugh. No wonder Sierra fired him.

I like Larry 6 & 7 the best. Especially the latter, it is hilarious and really well done. The fact that you actually have to ype the actions once in a while means you really have to think about the puzzle and not just try everything.

And you can put your own picture and voice in the game, hehe, and the "Scrath ?N Sniff", :)

The best product to come out of Sierra ever IMO.

I've never been a fan of mr. Lowe's games, and I respect him even less if he can't see that Grim was pure genius. ? ?
  • telarium on 18 Jun, 2002, 18:47…
I'm not a big fan of Lowe either, but I wasn't sure if he was talking about Grim and EMI, or if he was just talking to the new action/adventure titles like RTX Red Rock and Full Throttle II.
  • Remi O on 18 Jun, 2002, 19:17…
Whoops, I misread his quote there. Ahem. So sorry Al. I still don't like his games though. :)
  • telarium on 19 Jun, 2002, 09:31…
I'm surprised. From a guy who likes The Man Show, I figured you'd dig the Larry games. :)

Oh come on, you gotta love the Man Show Boy!
